Ok i have a small problem i hope. The lower unit needed some paint so i am repainting it with the factory paint so it looks nice.So i taped up every milk and crany including all the bolts so it would come out nice.

Well here is my problem, there is 2 small what seems to be either water intake holes or water drain holes on the opposite side of the bolts that holds the lower unit in.When i'm done running the engine and i pick it up water drains out of them, they are pretty small holes.Well i was trying to be to neat and put a small piece of tape in the hole to protect it from paint and of course my luck it fell in the hole and i can't get it out.The question is will this hurt the motor as the piece of tape is very small and i know water either comes or goes from the holes as i think it can work it's way out of the holes or break apart.

Any help on this one?And if the piece won't work it's way out how do i get it out?I can't see it not breaking apart in time but that is why i'm asking for help because i don't want to damage the motor.

Thanks for any info fellows.

I think this is okay here. He isn't asking for troubleshooting or repair.

There are quite a few holes on outboard gearcases, from pickup, to drain, to speedo. Might want to post a pic and circle the hole your talking about.
More than likely it's not going to hurt anything though. As all the holes get mud and debris in them over time.

More than likely.... it will do no harm. If the holes are accessible when you change out your impellar ......you will be fine. Just keep in mind all of the debris and stuff that flows though our outboards while they are running....... sand, mud, vegetation etc........ that tape will not hurt.

Thats what i figured. It looks like just some drain holes.I think in time it may just fall apart because it's so small. It pushed in the hole pretty easy so it should come out pretty easy over time.I don't think it will get caught up in the system at all but i wanted to be safe then sorry.

The motor is brand new and was used as a demo in a marina for a few mths and was moved alot so it had some bad scratches and some peeling paint that i saw when i bought it.It was only on the bottom of the motor, the rest of the motor doesn't look like it was ever even touched. It has a total of 45minutes of runtime on it and it's a 2001 model yr.

The guy at the marina didn't pull it out of the box till july of this yr to use it for a demo. There is nothing really bad it just looked like the lower unit rubbed on something while it was standing up and a small piece of paint chipped off down to the bare metal so i am sanding the few spots and repainting it thats how this tape thing happened.

I will tell you one thing there is very limited paint on these things as you can sand to the bare metal fast with very little pressure.Almost makes me want to paint the whole thing over. Thanks for the help guys.I will take a pic and put it on here.Hopefully it will be easier to see.

They just drain out water that might get trapped. Unless you are in an area where you will be storing the motor in freezing weather (I would tell you to use a toothpick to check it they were clear) I would not worry at all.

Those holes are simple drains w/o any other use.......ie. not for cooling or intake.

Awesome bob thanks for the help.Thats what i also figured because everytime i took the motor out of the tank i was running it in thats were the water would drain from.Aso i live in fl so there is no need to worry about freezing temps. It was a pretty cold winter here last yr and are expected to have another one which would be bad as it killed alot of fish i catch.
