Ladies and Gents I could really use your help on this one. My wife and I are looking for a newer auto to tow our new boat with. She is also needing one because the one she has is on its last leg. We have gone to about 15 different dealerships test driveing and comparing how we were treated as a younger couple purchasing an automobile. We plan on haveing a family here soon so there are a few requirements that this auto must have, like 4 full sized doors, and cargo space and feww good about driveing it. We started out with an 05 ford f-150 supercrew, it handeled ok she liked how big and roomy it was and i also liked the towing copacity. So we left the dealership and kept that in mind. We went on to drive a chevy, a dodge, a tahoe, an expidition, a couple toyotas and then finaly an avalanche. Instantly she fell in love with the avalanche. We Proceeded to a few more just to make sure this was what she wanted. A Love for the truck soon became an obsesion (IE we could get this and this and this and now do that) so now im starting to get excited aabout an new auto. She has a few requirement and so do I about this truck. She wants a cd player and No Plastic body clading, I wanted the z-71 and a roof rack and husky floor liners. Well we tell a few Dealerships what we wanted. Well one very close to me found one. Its absolutly loaded. Leather, Heated Seats, XM, Onstar, and A MoonRoof. Yo Know its right in our price range and has only 28,500 miles on its an 2004. Were thinking great this one could be ours. Well its being delivered to the dealer on Monday. So we get to go and check it out and drive and have a repair shop you know check it over for us. Later on yesterday the salesperson called me and had some info for me about when i could come and see it and so on. Then I flat out tell him that I wanted to get it checked out by a trusted repair shop and that I wanted a GMVIS report on it. (Now heres where I realy Start to get Nervious) He called me back and told me it was a gm buy back vehicle. So they are purchaseing it direct from gm after it has been repaired. So I ask him why did gm buy it back from its owner. He goes on to tell me that it had went in many times for repair of its power steering system and a few minor other things. and then he reassured me that it is been fixed by gm and they cannot sell it unless it is fixed. So Ladies and Gents here is where the advice comes in to play. Where Do I Go From Here? He told me that gm puts a 12 month 12,000 Warrenty on the repairs that were done and I still have to remaining factory warrenty. Once Again Where Do I Go From Here? Also What Would You Do? Here are the Specs on it.

2004
Chevy Avalanche
White No Body Cladding and all of the goodies.
28,500 Miles
$23,900
3GNEK12T04G213021

I would like to thank you all in advance for all of your help. We Are a young couple with not much knoldge in the automotive field. We are just trying to find a vehicle that has not many problems or problems that have been fixed.

Thanks Again
Adam

I guess if it were me, I would want to know how they repaired it. If they hadn't replaced the entire system, I'd probably leave it. Unless they dropped the price another couple of grand at least. It would just make me nervous which isn't what you want when you're spending $24k for a truck. Sounds like a great truck though. Ask for a complete repair history on the vehicle and look over it carefully. That should help you make your decision.

If they are fixing it and standing behind it I wouldn't worry too much. Like Drowned Rat said, if the system has been that much trouble I would feel better if it was all new. I don't think they will replace parts unless they absolutely need to. Just make sure you get that warranty on the steering system in writing. Read all the fine print. Ask all the questions you need to about anything that's unclear to you regarding warranty or wear and tear items. Finally get any answers that will be favorable to you should you need to act in writing. If anything should go wrong no one will remember any discussions that took place. But paper and ink always remembers! Good luck and nice truck! ;)

Hmmmmm. Some big plusses here and a big minus.

Plus: Only the Toyota Tundra is rated higher than the Avalanche by Consumer reports, and it is one of only 4 full size pickups they recommend.

Plus: Price is good, warranty is good.

Minus: This was so bad a lemon that GM bought it back from the original owner. What did they do to it that they didn't do before the buy back? How much risk is there that it is still not permanently fixed?

I think I would check out the (made in USA by USA Union workers with mostly USA made parts) Tundra before I committed.

Good luck. :)

Is the 12/12 warranty extended past the factory warranty, or will it expire about the same time the factory warranty does?

I wouldn't buy it because it was built in Mexico.

The deal is that if GM bought it back, the previous owner had to have it in the shop A LOT to fix this problem, and they could never fix it thats why GM had to buy it back.

If the vehicle couldnt be fixed right when the first owners had it what makes you think its fixed right now?

Also get the previous owners name and call him/her and ask for details.

Also on the vehicle title it will say that it was a lemon buy back, lowering the value. If you ever goto sell it, it could be a tough sale.

Keep all those things in mind.

Re: I need some newer auto advice

WAY TOO HIGH! I just left a Chevrolet Dealership in OCT 05. A brand new (uncladed)loaded w/nav, roof, and leather Avalanche Z-71 was knocked down to $31,000 after discounts. Take one that is 2+ years old, 28K miles and it was a buyback!! Stay Away. Dealerships get the buybacks real cheap. The dealer is going to make a HUGE profit. Right now there is a 4000 rebate and the trucks hold almost 3000 in profit. So a brand new one starts at 34K less the rebate and the profit and you are down to 27K. It is safer to finance a newer vehicle with a full warranty, Used vehicles do dot get the same financing options (rates) that new ones do.

Good advice from me..... KEEP LOOKING.

I would never buy a buy-back unless it was dirt cheap. The price for yours is not dirt cheap. You are suffering from that syndrome we all suffer from when we are ready to get another car, it clouds the judgement. Just slow down and keep looking, there are other Avalanches out there that would meet your needs and not be a buy-back.

I would pass on it for the reasons listed above.

Friend of mine bought an Avalanche last year.
They are not thrilled with it.

Do you really need a truck?
How big is your boat?

Another friend of mine just boaght a Dodge Magnum, non hemi version.
Got a great deal on it, and it's still fast.
2000-3800# tow rating. And can have AWD.

Re: I need some newer auto advice

The buy back would not bother me at all, but the price is a bit high. When we had our dealership we bought many of the buy-backs at the GM auction - they were cheap, could be resold at a great price and never gave any trouble. We only had GM buy back one of our customer's vehicles, and my experience with that let me know that when it comes to buy-backs, a lot of that is because of the customer. Our buy-back was because the front wheel drive car had a slight vibration at 80 MPH.

Don't be afraid of the buy-back. As for the price, are you buying straight out or are you trading something in? If trade-in, what are you trading in and how much are you getting for it? The price of the truck could be inflated to give you a "higher value" for your trade.

The "repurchase" could have been for hundreds of different reasons.

Many times, it is just a customer satisfaction tool. Sometimes a customer and a particular vehicle just don't "fit". Or, something as simple as a parts delay.

You have a right to see the repair history.

Re: I need some newer auto advice

Thanks Guys for all of your info and insites. I thiank we are going to pass on this deal just because of a funny feeling that I have about it. Just to answer a few questions. This is my wifes truck. The Ride Quality and Features have to be to her likeing. That is why we chose the avalanche. Our Newer boat is a 2003 Sea Ray Sundeck. I havent had it weighed yet as we just took delivery of it 2 weeks ago. Manu Specs List it at 3500 Dry But i know it will be over 5k after gas and water and toys are added. SBN: I have a personal opinion about Dodge. I have had a few and have had nothing but problems. ( Dodge Dakota Dodge Neon and Also A Stratus) The Tundra We have Drivin and She Didnt Like It.....Its Harsh But If Shes Not Happy then You Know.

Once Again Thanks.... We Are Passing On This One.

Thanks Adam

Re: I need some newer auto advice

skiuseme,

I would think you made a great decision. It's advise that my dad gave me years ago when purchasing cars. They Make Them Every Day. And when dealing with a dealership that didn't disclose this prior to your inspection during the negotioation process is one I would walk away from.

My guess is in a month or so you could find a similar deal. It is too much money to role the dice on. Pay alittle more and get a vehicle you can trust out of the gate. On a 4K truck sure. I have to say I am not totally satisfied with either my tahoe or my current expedition. Next time I will look at a Armada or a Sequoia.
