I have a 1985 Evinrude 150 Hp. I recently overheated it bad and found out I blew my head gaskets. And I over heated because my water jackets were coroded and full of dried salt. I guess the guy befor me never flushed the engine after use. Anyways, rather than spend a ton of money on a buffer pad and toot, is there a chemichle or cleaner i can soak it in that will eat away all the salt and corrosion on the water jacket plate? And same question for the head. I want to clean that too befor i put the new gaskets on and put it back together.

Well, I don't know about the water jacket situation, but I would lay some sand paper on a very flat surface, like glass and clean the mounting surface of the heads. Move the head around in a figure 8 pattern. The center will likely get cleaned last.

Some one will probably chime in pretty quick on suggestions. This site is a good one, for getting answers. Outside of pulling the motor down entirely and soda blasting out the jackets, I just don't know. I too would like to find out, because I have lots of oldies from the '50's and before.

try a mild acid like vinegar to take the deposits off, those deposits are really no different than hard or soft water deposits. CLR may work if the vinegar isn't strong enough.

I have used muriatic acid to clean up the corrision but the trick is not to leave it on too long and to flush real good.

I just cleaned the inside of my hot water heater (one of the new high efficiency tankless units) by running vinegar through it for an hour.
Used a small circulating pump...flow ~ 5 GPM, +/- .
That should work for you.
I had a 5 gallon pail with 4 gallons of vinegar and just let it run from the pail through the heater and pack into the pail.
