I need to replace my shift cables 170

Is this hard to do? From what I have read I have to remove the sterndrive and pull the cable thru. Am I going to need an alignment tool to finish this project? <br />1986 merc 170

You should check your alignment EVERY time you take the drive off. Plus check the gimbal bearing and visually check everything while it's off.<br />BUT, you do not HAVE to just go change the cable.<br />Here's a link to some HOW TO info you may find helpful.<br /> http://www.mercstuff.com/howdoi.htm

I read that but it didn't go specifically into a step by step (maybe that is asking to much) how to cange the shift cable. After the sterndrive is off is it obvious how to change the cable? I have the manual #8 for the engine but I am looking for a good manual for the drive.
