I have a 1976 Sea Ray SRV 220, Mercruiser 888. My boat will not go into reverse and many of you have told me that I have a bad lower shift cable.

I haven?t had the chance to look at it. I will tomorrow (my day off) finally :D I did some research online to where I can order it and how much it would be. I wanted your guys opinion on what I found.

Links are

1. http://www.marine-shiftcable.com/im519a.htm

2. http://www.sterndrives.com/supplies/mdtips02.html ( Also a good site that can help people with questions)

And is this the ?special? tool that some of you guys have told me that I need? Is this the right one?

3. If the cable is not too bad, can it just be readjusted?

4. Also, does the stern drive have to be taken off to replace this cable?

Thank you all.

1. looks like a glm part number. i wouldn't (i've had glm parts that need to be modified to fit or work, ya shouldn't have to do that. since then, all glm parts are suspect for me)
2. looks like a mercruiser part number. that'd be the ticket...

i understand there's a difference between cables. the oem one is the one to get... from wherever.. but get a mercruiser shift cable..

If indeed you decide to do the shift cable job, then yes your drive is definately coming off for this job. Yes again to getting the 'special tool' for this job, though you can make one out of a tall socket thats the right size by tacking a few nuts on the drive end of the socket with a welder and then using the appropriate socket on the nuts. I have both the factory tool and one that I made myself, and in all honesty what I made not only works better, but is far more heavy duty than what I got from Merc. Either way you decide to go, you will need it.

I haven't been up inside an 888 in several years now, but if my memory serves me right this has the old style shift cable in it which has the double nut at the bellhousing. Maybe one of the other guys here remembers these 70's bellhousings better than I can at the moment.

don't know about the double nut. but if his is like my 75 165, the shift cable will be screwed in from the fore side of the bellhousing, the new cable will thread in the aft side of the bellhousing...

Thank you all for the response.

Its going to be a tough learning experience. But it has to be done!

I'm just not sure which part to order, so if anyone knows a link to where i can order the right lower shift cable let me know please.

The 76 cable threads from the fore side. He will need to remove the hinde pins, get the old cable out, then thread the bell housing so that the aft-threaded new cable will work. After it is threaded, then he can install the new shift cable.
