Looks like it slid right over in that grassy field, don't see much damage. Boat wasn't tied down or what happened?

Was strapped in the stern across it..Bow strap pulled free also..
Popped of ball..hit fence..boat launched..It didnt slide..it flew..then slid

Wow Kev,

So glad that no one was hurt, your ego aside.

Aint gonna make jokes, my shoulder is still wrecked from a trailer wreck 12 years ago and it hurts more everytime I see something like this.

Glad you and the cows are ok.

If it is only a few grand to fix things and nobody was hurt , You are very fortunate . I commend you for posting this as many people would not because of fear of embarrassment . Due to this post I checked my trailer today and I was able to break one of the tow safety chains by twisting it . I'll donate 5.00 to your relief fund , tell me where to send it !

Right on on the safety chains, pulled home my new to me '84 sea ray last weekend, she jumped off the ball too!! lucky for me the new chains did thier thing and only a small scuff and dent in the tailgate of my truck. Larger one on my pride. The new coupler the seller was so proud of had never been tightened up from below. the lock did nothing but flop down and look like it was locked. On my check list now!! And not just pulling up on the trailer but looking at the ball!

Gonna head to the lake on Monday ... will do a double check of the chains before then!

I have been passed by trailer tires before, but never a flying boat! YIKES!

It never ceases to amaze me how much we can all learn
from each others mishaps! Glad for you it wasn't a lot
worse.

Big of you to post this Kev.

Last year I was a first year rookie so I'm still really paranoid
about towing. My fear is that as time goes by I will start to
get complacent. Your post is a good cure for complacency!

I learned right here to cross my safety chains and that I
needed more than just a winch rope securing the boat to the trailer!

If it's any consolation my first 3 posts on this site were on
SHT'S! No towing mishaps but I did just about everything else!!

Glad nobody was hurt. Hope the overall damage is minimal. Going to have a lot of us double checking the actual security of our safety items now.
Takes a very strong person to admit to this and post it. Thank you for reminding us all and sharing this.

Ken.

It just occurred to me that my boat/trailer does not have a safety chain from the trailer to the boat, only the winch strap. Off to the hardware store....

Re: I nominate myself..Boat flew off trailer

Just as a follow up..and a FYI

I discovered yesterday that my coupler that locks down on the ball was pretty much shot.
I spent 20.00 on a new "repair" kit as the actual coupler assembly (?) is welded to the trailer.
You have to get under there every so often while the trailer is hitched and inspect the nut and spring.
If you can easily lift the lock without any resistance, it's too loose and won't hold with any severe bumps or upward pressure!
Tighten the nut till you can't lift the lock..Then back her off till you can, with some resistance..
