I finally found a decent deal on Ebay on a used GPS that would do what I want it to do. I didnt need anything fancy, so I picked up a little Garmin eTrex. About the size of a cell phone. No real mapping feature, just the basic waypoint goto features, speed, distance traveled, average speed, elevation, etc. Learning how to use it now, pretty simple actually.
---------------------------
Those things are really useful. Do yourself a favour and get a list of the locations of the buoys near you and plug them into it. But make sure you're set to the correct map datum when you do that. Found that one out for myself the hard way one foggy morning!

Going to start playing that world wide scavenger hunt now :) Have a friend who played for about a year and really had fun. You find your gem and replace it with another. (2oz bottle of GTA)
:D :D :D

I also have an etrex...4 years now I think and I am on the second one now (lost the first one on the Umpqua last July)...it's been very helpful, but mostly keeps the wife from worrying so much when I'm out in the wilderness. Now she wants for me to get a sattelite phone...never I says, never... :D

Link:

I checked out the Geocaching on the net, My God, there are millions of things hidden out there, Many very close. I dont have time to boat and fish let alone chase down a pack of gum or something. I know there are a lot of people doing it though. I guess it might be a fun family outing in the outdoors though. A way of getting the kids out of the house with a reward to look for and actually teaching them something at the same time. I quess I can see the fun in it for some.

Just be sure to write down the coordinates of your secret fishing spot, if your unit zaps out for some reason, you'll be able to plug it back in and find the spot.....

Instead of writing down your waypoints, try using EasyGPS. Its free and can be downloaded from http://www.easygps.com/. Its and easy way to download and save your waypoints, tracks, and routes. I ended up purchasing the expert version which automatically downloads topo and terraserver maps.

Holy smokes LubeDude thats a lot of stuff. Going to have to invest in one myself pretty soon. More for boat speed than anything else.

Link:

Thats pretty much the only reason I got one, and bought used at that. Boat speed, distance and time traveled. Fun little toy though. Also gives elevation.
