There is a 23 'bayliner explorer for sale for $500,I/O needing replacement. This is a semi displacement type hull and only had a 4 cyl volvo driving it.Would it be feasable/economical to convert it to a Yamaha 4 cycle outboard by installing an engine pod?The interior has been stripped out ,likely rot issues in the stringers. If I bought it-I would be looking at replacing stringers and transom repairs. My thinking was to replace and extend the stingers, beyond the transom and construct an engine pod, then glass the whole thing in.The other option would be to replace the stringers, rebuild the transom and attach a prebuilt engine pod. This is a not a high speed planing hull so I don't see the need to go much beyond a 115 hp yamaha .The advantage to converting to outboard would be increased cockpit room.Has anybody done such a conversion on a semi displacement hull such as the bayliner explorer?

If you went with a new motor and bracket the total cost with the repairs you listed would run upwards of $15,000. Is it worth that to you?

Of course it will be less with used stuff, but still not cheap.

It sort depends on what you want, a running boat that would still need a little work will cost about half that and will include all the electronics and many extra's you'll end up needing.

going to an outboard, throws the center of balance off in the original hull design. most people who do this, are usually extremely unhappy with the end result.
