Okay I took a look at a 350 Mercruiser (circa 1986) and the hour meter was at 2760. Is this average (yes I realize that depends on the demographics but here in VT we have a short season)? Is there a rule of thumb for a rebuild (such as a diesel rebuild should be around every 10000 hrs)?

Additionally, the oil smelled bad (burnt a real sign of neglect) and I was less than impressed.

I was very doubtful of the engine from my first look.

Any thoughts?

Bob

Most boats up here Never see 100hrs a year......
At 2760hrs., with Burnt Oil....
My Guess is that 1 is about Used Up........
3000hrs is an Old motor.......
5000hrs Is Possible,
But Rarely Seen...............

I would highly recommend that you "take a look" at another boat. There are way too many boats on the market with way less hours.Remember the hours on the motor are also on everything else in the boat too.Charlie
