winterizing my boat for the first time, it is a 91 Glastron 20 BR w/ a 5.7 merc alpha 1. the manual recommends quicksilver 4 cycle. is that what I should use?
is that comparable to a 25W 40 automotive oil?

rnorth, If you plan to use the motor during cold weather, use the synthetic or non-synthetic Mercruiser 25W-40 oil. If you plan to use the boat only in the summer, use the SAE 40 straight weight oil.

Why? ? ? ? ? Nothing wrong with using the 25W-40 in the summer. Look at that chart I posted.

LIke Don S stated, I think it is easier to just stay with one motor oil the whole time, then there are no worries about what you put in and the temperature.

Someone told me to use SHell Rotella 15w40, but I am not sure about that, it is diesel oil.

Wasn't pulling your leg, there is no reason to use straight 40W oil in the summer. The 25W-40 wil work summer AND winter.
Look at the temp ranges in the chart I posted which is part of the service bulletin.

This is something I pondered for a while and researched. There is no comparison. Use the right oil and be done with it. After all, it's only done once a year.

I don't understand why you wouldn't just use 25W40 all year long, unless you could'nt find it and needed a quick replacement. As my manual says, only use the automotive straight weight oils as a last resort..
