It depends on your needs and desires. Both are good at certain things and not so good at others. Outboards are very maintenance friendly. Flushing is simple and winterizing is not really an issue since all the water that comes into the engine will drain by gravity when the boat is removed from the water. They are louder and older models are not as efficient is I/O. I/O are quiet, efficient, and you don't have to worry about fuel/oil mixtures but can be maintenance intensive. Changing the oil is not always easy and you have to make sure all water is out of the block before cold weather. If you respond with how, when, and where you want to use your boat, I'm sure you'll get plenty of opinions.

Jim

Re: i/o or ob??

hmmmm....personally i like outboards but that is towards my fishing preferences only. I fish lake ontario and use downriggers on a 20 ft cuddy cabin and it saves lots of space when bringing in salmon and lake trout. I have an older outboard though and it tends to smoke a lot so when we are trolling with the wind it fills the cabin (newer engines tend to smoke less). Its not a big deal though. My father has an I/0 and it works great but then again he is losing about 27 sq ft of fishing area. His I/O gets extemely good fuel mileage though unlike my outboard. If you are gonna go for a outboard i suggest you go with the 4 stroke. I know they are expensive but you get the best of both worlds. Lots of room and a good dependable engine.

If you can work on a car you can work on a I/O and parts are very common. Outboard are a diffrent story. There are many other points though,it depends on your needs.

My experience:
Fishing - O/B
Most other kinds of boating I/O
Both have +/-'s when it comes to Maint.
I love my I/O, dependable and quiet.

Jimmy:

When you say dependable are they twice three times as dependable? I recently moved from an O/B to an Inboard (Ski boat) and am a little nervous about making the move - maintenance and upkeep only.
