I/O position during trailering?

A couple weeks ago. I was given a rather old Starcraft, with a Mercruiser 2.5L.
As I've been lurking this site, I now have some questions about my ride home. (Minnesota to Nebraska). I don't have any paperwork or manuals, yet.

What position should the stern drive be in, during trailering?
I used a rubber tarp strap with another strap to support it.
I hope I didn't screw up anything.

As long as there is enough clearance between road and stern drive when it's down so it doesn't hit road it doesn't matter where it is.

That's just it, I didn't know it should be down. That's why I tried to support it with the tarp strap.

Now, there's a new one, on me, never heard of 'trailering clips' before.

Thanks,
EJ

They take the strain off the tilt cylinders.

You have to have a lot of ground clearance if you are going to leave it down, think about all the places you turn into that you go slightly down on the street and then climb the hill to get in, when the tow vehicle goes up and the trailer wheels go down you have just removed at least part of the skeg, tow it in trailer position which is up like you have it in the picture. Just my thoughts.

There's a very good reason why the full up position is called the "trailer position" .............

Trailering clips are great, if they are too long just trim them shorter with a hacksaw

OK. So, FULL up is "Trailering Position". Correct?

Thanks.

When we head to the lake I trim all the way up and at the end of the day I trim my IO all the way down when we get home. If you're going to trailer serious long distances invest in a transom saver for your IO.

i'll have to agree with 45auto. why take the chance and leave it down, when it is capable of tilting? but i'm still just a rookie.

I don't use them in the winter. I don't even use them in the summer during storage. Only for towing. Trim down to save bellows and keep water/ snow out of prop and lower housing.

Same here. I only use them for towing. When your not towing, the I/O should be left down to help w the strain on the bellows.
