My question is about maintance of the U-joint on an I\O. I keep all parts of the I\O greased but there is no way to get to the U-joint without removing the rubber boot that covers it. Should I try to grease the U-joint our just leave it alone. Can the rubber boot clamps be moved without causing a problem with water getting to the U-joint later. The manual shows that the U-joint has grease fittings but it does not tell how to remove the rubber boot to get to them.

Re: I\O U-Joint

It is a Force L-Drive. It is a 92 model and I have not had any problems. I keep a the other parts greased but I can not get to the U-Joint without removing the rubber boot. I want to know if that could cause more problems than it would help.

i don't know about that particular drive, but on most u have to pull the lower unit to get at the u joint grease fittings. they should be greased once a season. if u don't your asking for trouble. the clamps are there to help prevent water from entering & damaging the gimbal bearing & the u joints.

Thanks for the information. I have not done it over the last 10 years. But a friend had trouble with his I/O so it got me thinking about it.

Re: I\O U-Joint

Should be part of regular maintenance, I replace my joints every year, if you are going to the trouble of getting to them to grease, then a few extra bucks and they are new. Check and replace bellow at same time if required. Do the job a few times and it becomes second nature. How many posts are related to u joint noise? Its a part of the driveline that gets a lot of abuse and often neglected (out of sight out of mind). Aldo
