Hey everybody-
I was thinking about getting my daughter a small graduation present like an I-pod or something similar. The thing is, I don’t know jack about any of them. (The last thing I had was a portable am/fm/cassette (walkman))! What are the options now? What are the pros and cons? She will want something she can use when working out, other uses unknown…?
Thanks!!!

At the time of this post I couldn't think of any of the other names, but I wonder how these stack up against mp3 players, the Zen etc...?

Re: i pod or what??? HELP

For convenience, the iPod is the way to go. As stated, there is a bunch of after-market accessories for it. It is seriously over priced but there is nothing you can do about it.

If you had time to wait I’d suggest sitting tight and wait for the next generation of Zune, the Microsoft MP3 player. It comes std with (limited) wi-fi enabled. It has phenomenal capabilities, but MS has not enabled all of them, yet. You know it is just a matter of time before someone hacks the Zune and free software downloads to enable all features will be available.

For exercising, silicon memory is the way to go, otherwise, a unit with an internal HD offers more storage capacity than most people can realistically use. Apple MP3 player, the 1gb Shuffle, seems to be gaining popularity among the athletic crowd.

If sound quality is a goal, iPod is out. For quality of sound an iPod barely even shows up on the radar. There is just way, way too many other MP3 players that sound better than an iPod. The king of MP3 sound is the Creative Labs Zen M.

I had an opportunity to compare an iPod side-by-side with a bunch of other MP3 players. An iPod sound like crap-ola…unless you have nothing to compare it to. In that case you wouldn't know the diference, so it doesn't matter. Panasonic makes what I believe is the best MP3 player. Unfortunately, it is not sold in the US.

Audio only players are marked for doom. Video is now integrating onto MP3 players, will be the std in the very near future. The first generation of iPods with video (gen 5.5) are lacking but nearly as good as most of its competition. The next generation of iPod (gen 6) is expected to take iPod video to the top of the heap, surpassing the Zune's more advaned video. We’ll see.

Currently, folks serious about playing any kind of portable video files gravitate toward something like an Archos PVP (portable / personal video player). There is no comparing a PVP with any portable, video-enabled MP3 player like the iPod, Zune, Zen M or whatever. They are totally different product categories.

The single biggest drawback against the iPod is the restrictions of the iTunes software and moving the music files YOU own to different players. There are limits as to what you are allowed to do. My understanding is there are software hacks available to get around the limits but they are clumsy and not always easy to use. Good news is the guy that originally hacked the DVD format coding has just recently hacked the iPod copy protection scheme. So moving files to/from an iPod should get easier in the very near future.

Ironically (or not) just on the heels of the iPod’s copy protection scheme getting hacked, Steve Jobs announces the music industry would be better off abandoning all copy protections, and Apple will be pushing in that direction. Humm…

Bottom line: if you are not sure what to get, buy her a 4gb iPod Nano, and don’t look back. If you buy it from an Apple store I think she can return it within 14-days or 30-days or something like that, if she does not want it, but I suspect she will want it. You're biggest concern should be what color to get her. :)

Already very easy to get around. It is only an issue for files you buy from itunes, and you don't have to buy anything from them. Regular .mp3 files from any source work exactly the same, and have no restrictions what so ever. It's also quite easy to convert itunes files into mp3 files with various freeware programs. The only other issue is that you can't take music off your ipod and put it into a computer using itunes, but there are other programs that do that fine too.

Basically, itunes blows a goat. But you don't have to use it at all and there are plenty of good programs that make up for it.

Does the ipod show as a hard drive? Can you just copy the .mp3 files on and off of it without using special software?

Yes.

No. You can drag and drop files, but they won't show up in your playlists unless you use an extra program like Anapod explorer.

I use rhapsody and it works very easily. Like ZMOZ said drag and drop. MP3 files are not the most defined format for music. But for most applications they work great.

I have a samsung 2MB and it works great. I also use it to store photo's to share with friends when I am on the road.

Re: i pod or what??? HELP

I just bought my wife a 2MB Sansa for xmas. I really like it and it's expandable with a Sandisk slot on the side. Also we already had Rhapsody and they have an agreement between the two companies. I pay $15 a month and we get unlimited downloads to the Sansa, so in effect I now have a much better deal on Rhapsody because of the Sansa. Prior to the Sansa I had to pay .89 per song, now, once on the Sansa I have "bought" them and have them on it's memory that I can transfer to a CD if I want etc.

Oh, oh, one other benefit, the Sansa has an FM receiver built in and you can actually record from there too. . . record your own voice even. Not sure if ipods do that.

My daughter got a sumsung 2mb for Christmas. I use Yahoo jukebox to load the songs on it and it works great so far. She's 11 and rough on stuff so I'll give it a thumbs up.

Re: i pod or what??? HELP

Note, I had to upgrade to windows XP for the system to work. It made my purchase considerably more expensive once that was figured in. And a bit of a headache as we wiped everything out when we loaded it and everything from the drivers to the printer software had to be reinstalled.

QC, as this was a christmas present for my wife and seeing how much she enjoys it, I am thinking about one for myself.. She has been nice enough to share. Will the sanza software support more than one unit, with one of them being of a different mfg'r?

I wound up getting the samsung yp-t9jab. Its a very nice unit. She has almost 700 songs on it, pictures, and a few games that came with it. The battery seems to last forever. It sounds very good also. She is pretty hard on things (she's 14). She uses it every day and it still looks like brand new. I would look at a samsung before buying an overpriced ipod. The samsung website has a download center to install updates so there is support. The only downside that I could find is the lack of acessories which in my opinion are not needed anyways. I've hooked this thing up to the home stereo, car stereo and works very well for that too.

I don't know actually. Rhapsody and the Sansa knew all about each other immediately after I plugged in the Sansa, they seem pretty dedicated to each other.

I paid $12 a month plus the .89 prior, and obviously the $15 for the whole shebang is a great deal. There are a few songs that require purchase still, but so far I have only ran into that once. You could download on to the Sansa and then put them on your PC and then move songs to the other unit. This IMHO is precisely what honest "sharing" would be. As an example, you buy a CD and load them on multiple devices within your home. I buy a license to load songs for a monthly charge from Rhapsody and voila. I don't recall seeing any restrictions on what I could do with the songs once they were on the Sansa . . .

Re: i pod or what??? HELP

After reading all the responses. I would get a 4-gb I-pod. These players are all changing so fast, the minute you buy something, there is something better. A 4-gb is pretty cheap, it will introduce her into the I-pod mp3 world, and she can upgrade from there. If she doesn't like it she can return it.

I use I-tunes and like it. I will never buy another CD at a store. The music on line is half the price of that at a music store.

I am sure what rabbit said is quite true, The only thought is I have two auto's that came I-pod adapted, so I just plug it in. Not smart enough to know if the connection is the same with other players. I like the idea of plugging in my I-pod instead of a six disc changer.

I have about 50 cd's, some books and movies on my I-pod. Seems there will be a format war just like HD and blu-ray, but the consumer world seems to be going the I-pod route. The music purists will have the better audio units, but maybe won't be as versitle.

I'm looking forward to the future, this part of getting old is one of the only cool parts.

Funny you should say that! I ordered her the 4 GB ipod, with the Nike arm band. I got free engraving, free gift wrap, and free shipping!
