Please forgive me for wrong terminology as I am an I/O newbie. I was tooling down the road and a trailered boat pulled along side me. It was a high performance speed boat. It was at least 30 feet long and had twin out drives. What struck me as odd was that attached to each out drive was a stainless tube that looked to be about 2-2.5" diameter. It was attached to the tail end of the out drive just forward and above the prop. It stood tall enough that it would break the surface of the water.
The reason this struck me as odd was that this would suck a tremendous amount of air into the props. I always thought this was a bad thing that would cause the props to cavitate. Am I mis-interpreting the purpose of these tubes? Admittedly I could not see from my vantage point if the tubes were indeed hollow. I was just hopeful that someone far more knowledgeable then I am could un-confuse me. I attempted to take a pic with my cell phone but you couldn't even make out that it was a boat let alone the finer deails.
