I saw something weird on an outdrive, what was it for?

Please forgive me for wrong terminology as I am an I/O newbie. I was tooling down the road and a trailered boat pulled along side me. It was a high performance speed boat. It was at least 30 feet long and had twin out drives. What struck me as odd was that attached to each out drive was a stainless tube that looked to be about 2-2.5" diameter. It was attached to the tail end of the out drive just forward and above the prop. It stood tall enough that it would break the surface of the water.

The reason this struck me as odd was that this would suck a tremendous amount of air into the props. I always thought this was a bad thing that would cause the props to cavitate. Am I mis-interpreting the purpose of these tubes? Admittedly I could not see from my vantage point if the tubes were indeed hollow. I was just hopeful that someone far more knowledgeable then I am could un-confuse me. I attempted to take a pic with my cell phone but you couldn't even make out that it was a boat let alone the finer deails.

I'm guessing it was some sort of a drive shower? Lake water flows through it when your moving and sprays on the outdrive to cool it.

Could they be for making "rooster tails"?

Forgive my crude drawing and sorry it's not to scale.

The tube was forward of the prop so I don't think it would have caused a rooster tail. I certainly could be wrong.

Drive shower. The bottom of the tube is cut at an angle so that underway water is forced into the tube. The top end of the tube just spills water over the top of the drive to cool lube fluid. Not on any Merc Factory drives even their 1000 hp deals, so I have concluded they are useless. VERY popular though.

They aren't OEM, but they are useful, they do cool the upper and the drive oil looks much, MUCH, nicer after a few hours of HARD running at WOT. Especially with BBC engine. I have built them for Volvo drives, since the showers aren't (Or weren't then) available for Volvo DPS drives. That cooling water does wonders.

I always wondered how effective drive showers are. When you think about it, half of the sterndrive is still in the water at plane and that sterndrive is basically two huge pieces of aluminum bolted together. Are we saying that the heat transfer between the lower unit and the upper unit is not good enough to keep the upper cool?

Ayuh,... I agree that Cooler oil is most always Better,...

Every drive cooler/ shower I've ever seen was 3/8", maybe 1/2" tubing,...
Not 2, 1/2".....

I donno What you were lookin' at....

I would think that to be True....
A parting line is most any metal slows or stops the transfer of heat....
It's the same reason I can burn siezed bearing races off a quill, without nicking it....

I hate to say it to you Bruce, But heat rises..... it doesn't sink :)

heat does not rise. hold apiece of pipe in your hand at the bottom and heat the top of it and you will see.

Heat does not rise..hot air maybe but not heat in of itself.

It must be that the heat doesn't transfer through the joint.

Has anyone actually hung their a-$$ over the transom with an IR gauge to measure the top of the drive after driving for an hour?

Your talking about thermal conduction in solids. Different thing.

If you held the top of the pipe and heated the bottom, the top would get hotter alot quicker than it would if you did it right side up.

Light a candle. Hold your and above it. Gets hot right???? Hold your hand below it. Still get hot? Nope.

It a boat, The drive oil gets hot because of pressure (when you put oil under extreme pressure, it gets hot). Through convection the drive oil radiates to the gear housing. The gear housing naturally convects some of that heat to the water around it, but because both housings WANT to be the same temperature, Conduction pulls the heat up. Hot always goes to cold.

I stand by my original statement.... Heat rises.

I've done 1 better. I've been out tubing and wakeboarding for extended runs and I climb back into my boat by stepping up on the drive, and on top of the cap to get back in. The top of that drive can be damm right HOTTT sometimes.

Nope,... But have you noticed all the crud,+ salts that build up on a drive that's Run hard,...
It's because the drive is steaming off the water... Probably in the 180? to 190? range...

Ayuh,... If you take 3 little pieces of pipe,+ braze 'em together, Then quench 'em in a bucket of water,....
The Cold end it your hand gets to Welding Temps, Extremely Quickly....
Don't much matter which way is Up.....

Been there,.... Done that,....

To correct that....hot AIR rises. This doesn't necessarily apply to HEAT in general.

That's because the hot AIR rises. The HOT wax still falls and burns the hand below it.:)

I don't believe you have ever commented before on this topic. I always mention the same non-OEM available thing. Glad to have something real. I still don't understand why Merc and Volvo don't supply a factory version though. If you have data (lube condition) then you've got more than I've got

I have noticed they reduce the deposits before and I like that. I hate stuff in the wawa though.

Re: I saw something weird on an outdrive, what was it for?

The reason for drive shower is to DIRECTLY cool the upper gearset housing instead of waiting for the gearset to get cooled by the circulating oil returning from the lower unit. It's just added insurance.

Re: I saw something weird on an outdrive, what was it for?

Good grief. Cold water being constantly sprayed on the upper gear housing, cools the aluminum housing. Heat goes to cold. (Physics) so the heat from the gear lube is cooled by the cooler aluminum housing that is being cooled by the lake/ocean water being sprayed on it.

Kind of works like putting cold water in your radiator when the engine is hot. Ever notice how the engine cools down.

Drive showers cannot hurt, I was thinking of putting one on my wimpy 140 because after running at plane the drive is hot enough you can just barely keep your hand on it. I felt the top of the drive while at 20 mph after about 30 min of run time. Cooler oil is always a good thing and the drive builds up less pressure due to temp. change.

So now all we need to do is figure a way to put a t-stat in the OD and monitor at the helm..A combo trim position/OD heat gauge..lol

I will never have a monster off shore racer or anything big or fast enough to warrant one.....sadly:(
