Can anyone help? I have a 1979 Galaxy w/ a 120 Mercruiser. Just bought it used and can't figure out the problem. Prop moves fine when the engine is off but in gear, but when I start the engine and engage the throttle the engine immediately cuts off. Great boat but I'm not familiar with outdrives yet.

look where the two shift cables come together in the motor cvompartment.there should be a plate that they are connected to.there is a micro switch with a roller sitting in a V notch on the plate.hen you put it in gear see if the plate is moving to one side and cutting out the engine.if the cables are not adjusted properly it will screw up the shift interupt switch which is for coming out of gear easeally.

If the shift cable is as old as the boat you probably need to replace it.Jerry

Yes, it does move. I was thinking from the manual this might be the problem but wanted a better mind than mine. Thanks I'll try adjusting it.

i only say that its possibly a adjustment cause mine was dying when put in gear cause it was trying to engage to far and causing the switch to activate and kill the motor.
