I think I'm missing a piece in my exhaust...

I have an OMC 3.0 (1988-ish) in my Four Winns. I replaced the exhaust boot and gooseneck gasket the other day, and noticed a long pin going through the exhaust down pipe.

I didn't think much about it, until I saw a thread here about an exhaust shutter...

Apparently mine is gone, leaving only the pin? How big of a problem will that be? Forgive the newbie boat questions, but this is my first I/O

Til you experince a backwash, or waves hittin' the back of the barge, 'n it hydro-locks the motor....

If there was a rubber shutter on that pin, and it's come off, you will need to find it, as it will cause an obstruction where the downpipe meets the transom plate. Obstructing the exhaust will mean a loss of power, poor fuel economy and overheat.

There's a flexible tool made for mechanics, consisting of a lever handle, 2 ft flexible cable, with a grab action hook on the end, that may allow you to get it out without pulling the engine and exhaust.

Apparently I can't figure out the system here...

Went to omc sterndrive parts and searched for shutter and flapper, got no hits. If I searched all instead of just omc, there were a few, but nothing that looked remotely like what I need. Is there a part number or specific name I should be searching?

I had a flapper on OMC 3.0 1993 burn/rot off and blocked exhaust, poped back and got hot at rpm. Got parts at marineengine.com James 1 800 209 0624. There are 2 bushings that pop into the exhaust pipe to hold the pin in place. Yours are probably shot if the pin is out. Part numbers my invoice shows are nor clear as to which is which.
