It's a 1993 5.0 with the Cobra #987346.

I've replaced the vertical bearing and all that intails, realigned the gimble bearinng, etc, etc, reinstalled everything as it should be, 64 oz. of lube, the whole 9 yd. Took it to the lake started to plane out and then motor revs up forward motion decreases, and then the burnt rubber smell and smoke comes out from under the motor cover... any suggestions on what this'll cost me and how much of an assbeating it'll be to do?
If you've read my last post on here, you'll recall it locked down the motor when the vertical bearing seized. Is there any chance thats what has caused the engine coupler to fry, (I'm assuming thats what has happened?)..If anybody has any advice, I'm all ears.....

Thanks in advance...AJ

Burnt rubber smell= Bad coupler.

Did you align the engine with the alignment tool before the drive was bolted back up?
Either way the drive needs to come off and the engine pulled now.

Oh,The joys of boating...:(

Yes, join the club!

Everyone above has pretty much pegged it. you probably "spun" the coupler when the bearing seized. (or at least partially broke loose the rubber from the inner or outer metal coupler housing)

If you find black rubber powder in the back, that along with the rubber smell will pretty much confirm the failed coupler.

They fail from mis-alignment and/or drive seizures and prop strikes.

You'll be removing the engine to replace it.

Consider yourself lucky you don't have a 460 King Cobra. No one makes the couplers for them anymore.....

Cheers,

Plenty of big limbed Pecan trees in the back yard, one already has the short chain on it for the Chain hoist. Any guesstimates on a coupler cost?

Just replaced mine this past weekend for the 5.8 liter... $300 - $350 is the best I could find ( on ebay). Wasn't to bad of a job besides a few broken bolts in the bell housing cover, which a little heat helped come right out.

I guess I'll fix it again, hell at least it'll all be new again when I'm finished, then maybe it'll last another 16 years...LOL...
