I totally screwed up

I have a '73 Chrysler 70hp. Had my son prime the fuel bulb, it would only turn over, wouldn't catch (maybe primed too much?). Battery wound up getting too low, so I switched out the battery with another, I reveresed the poles and smoked the Motorola box. Don't ask, I was on the launch and had to get the boat moved fast... haste made waste.

Now what? It was a beautiful day, perfect for fishing and I do this. Don't make those units anymore . I've seen these CDI amplifiers that don't have a hook up for a tach, not sure if that will work- really like my tach to work. I don't quite know what to do, first boat, owned for 2 months... In a bind if you can help. thanks.

Fer Shur! You did screw up totally. Franz over at The Chrysler Crew almost certainly will have one but he won't be cheap. And if by some slim chance he doesn't have one, I believe that engine had points signaling the CD box. It is relatively simple to retrofit to points and coil ignition. It won't have as hot a spark and the idle won't be as good but it will work. Just be certain to buy a 12 volt coil not a 9 volt. Autos had a dropping resistor and used a 9 volt coil because battery voltage dropped to 9 volts during cranking. Outboards do not drop so radically and don't have the dropping resistor, so they need a 12 volt coil.

You can also put an ad in the Chrysler Crew classifieds to try and find a good used CD box.

Re: I totally screwed up

I've found some new CDI "amplifiers" that say they will work for my model- my Motorola box is a 6CB2012B model.

If I hooked up one of these CDI modules, they all say they don't have a tachometer wire. Guess I'd need to get a new tach.

Would these CDI (Rapair) units hook right up, or will I have to do something else to get it to work?
