Yup, I want to be rich so I don't have to keep dealing with 30+ year old crap that can't make it through a season with some issue evan though there isn't much on it that hasn't been replaced or rebuilt. Tired of getting one problem fixed just so another can pop up. If there is a god in heaven, please send me a brand new engine before I loose the rest of my very thinning hair!!!!!!! -end of rant-

Re: I wanna be rich

I posted last week about how I drilled a hole in my steel hull for a scoop strainer, and even though Im in drydock still, I had water shooting up thru the hole.

It was plated over, and water is getting trapped between the layers of hull. More work for me to get it pumped out, and aired out so it doesn't rust out.

So, I know how you feel..

My boat is not 30yrs so does that make me rich. I don't think so. Maybe financing a new boat with warrenty is your next option.

I feel your pain. I'm raising Kids in this Economy as well and it can be tough to living the boating dream sometimes.

I can't relate to the "thirty plus year old boat", but I sure as hell can relate to the thinning hair.....

Good luck.............................with both..............

So do I..... but it would have to be one substantial increase in wealth. If ya only got a little richer, you may be able to buy your way out of your current problems but the relief would only be temporary. Eventually even your new yacht, mansion, diamond encrusted braces, etc would develop problems and you'd be at a loss as to how to keep up with those repairs. Then at some point you'd be back in the same boat (alibit a much larger one) and wishing you were richer, lol. Im thinking Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison, Mark Zuckerberger rich would do me just fine, lol.

KNot has a point. Problems just do not go away with Money. You will have much more expensive ones.

Maybe so, but I wouldn't mind trying them out:) I mean, it'd be nice to be able to just go and buy 3 carb kits when I need them instead of having to wait to see if I can afford them. It's my own fault, I made way to many kids:)

Re: I wanna be rich

i was watching the beverly hillbillies on tv few days ago and the episode was about the clampets having to "deal" with being rich he wrote a check for 68 million dollars and he was instantly happier being broke.

having said that the richer you are the more problems you have because you dont have 2 cars you have 20 so you dont have 1 problem you have 10. same thing when you buy a boat with twins if one motor has a problem you might as well fix the same thing on the other one before it has problems. also the bigger something is the more a repair shop will soak you for in the end knowing that you must have money owning a $50,000+ boat.
just my thoughts anyway.

How rich is rich enough? The more you have, the more you want.

Re: I wanna be rich

I get to feeling the same way sometimes. My last boat was a '72 and so is the current one. But at least once a year I help tow a younger beast back in to the marina and realize that boating humbles everybody. About three years ago I towed a '06 Mastercraft into the marina with my '72 15' tri-hull. It's one thing to get towed in, but it's another to have the "grandpa" boat tow ya' in.

Plus I think about those payments ... yeeeesh.

Aww, I'm just griping about the repair costs. You guys know that with older stuff it takes more to keep it going. The seasons just getting started and I've already had to replace leaking seals, a prop, plugs, and now it looks like I'm gonna have to rebuild the carbs. I don't nessairaily want to be filthy rich, but it'd be nice to be able to afford all the parts with no stress ya know:)

Hang in there. Once you've got all the stuff working it doesn't break or fail as often because you learn the signs and schedules.
Of course then, if you are like a lot of us you start making "improvements" or start detailing the rig.
It never ends, but it keeps me sane.
In fact I'd be out on the boat now except that it's 90 minutes away and I have to stay home to do some bizness.

Re: I wanna be rich

I ain't rich, but I got skills. :) I bought a 30 year old boat and rebuilt it from the keel up. I bought a 20 year old motor and rebuilt it from the skeg up. Knock on wood - it's been a great rig!

My point being, I've been there with the old stuff that I spent all my time chasing one issue or another. My eureka moment came when I decided to start with a clean slate and fix it all once. I couldn't afford new stuff, but I had the time and knowledge, and just enough fundage, to make the old stuff I could afford as good as new.

Re: I wanna be rich

I remember reading about a survey of lottery winners that found the vast majority said they were happier before they won. Apparently, the pressure from long-lost family and friends coming out of the woodwork is intense.

I wouldn't mind the chance to find out for myself though (I guess I'd have to buy a ticket first though).

Re: I wanna be rich

Even if you're wiping your butt with $20 bills on one side only, that won't change what the acronym BOAT stands for! :D

Being able to do your own repairs makes you richer than anyone who just has a lot of cash laying around to solve problems. As my dear old Dad used to tell me, anyone can do it with money!

The fun is in the journey, not the destination...
