Can anyone advise me of how to make a mooring?

The place I'm staying at this summer has no docking facilities but I can put my own mooring in.

I've never put one in before. I know I need a buoy and rope...beyond this I don't know what to use or how to place the anchor. I've heard of people using everything from old engine blocks to large concrete blocks. I can't use the engine block for ecological reasons, and I don't know how to get the concrete block to it's eventual resting place.

Also, the boat is a 2452 bayliner and weighs about 5500 lbs. What size mooring would work?

Thanks!

http://www.annesanchors.com/

you have a pretty big boat and depending on the worst conditions it has to not wonder away in will make a BIG difference in what you drop in the water

the local people should no what works best up there

i kept a 24 ft in a harbor in orient point long island and it had to be BIG because every summer storm from the south really tore up the place and i have seen many boats drag small ground tackel to the beach

i needed a 250# and ALL chain to keep a 24 ft 2700 # sailboat safe

tommays

Just down the coast from you, in Maine,.......

500lb. Blocks of Granite are Pretty Popular for mooring blocks.........

And,.. Chain,.... Lot's of Chain,....... That's what'll keep your boat from Tearing itself Up...........

Re: I want to make a mooring...

i used a mushroom that looked like it down here moorings are very controled

my harbor was BAD in any northeaster and my boat allways stayed put :D

its not like you can do anything once the weather gets bad and it turns out to be a littel small :(

you have to use the right stuff and there droped in a controled grid because thers a LOT of boats and you cant have them banging into each other

and you cant put in garbage and let your boat take out 6 other boats in a storm

i allways found out what the people who had been there a long time were doing and did what they did

tommays

Re: I want to make a mooring...

I made my mooring out of a steel 30 gal drum.I filled it with concrete and a few rocks.I drilled some holes for re-rod to pass through.I had a heavy truck spring U bolt set through the top for the chain to attach. The bottom of the lake is soft sand and the re-rod in a X through the drum really has dug into the sand.My boat is 1800lbs.I figured the mooring is around 260 lbs.I had all the supplies so all I had to buy was the bags of quickcrete.I put it on our raft(float)and when I had it in the desired location myself and a friend pushed it overboard. The only downside is a few times the chain has wrapped around the drum.Usually when the water is like glass and there is no tension on the chain.

Re: I want to make a mooring...

Not to hijack the thread, btu this belongs here sorta..... I've tinkered with the idea of a moorign of my own. The rest of my city either trailers, or rents a slip for the season..... however my grandmother owns 2 waterfront properties about 2 minute drive from my house. How convenient.

The water is VERY shallow, I can walk maybe 200 feet before it's deep enough for the boat. There's no tide. The beach is 100% exposed to the lake, and receives the unsheltered force of every wave and whitecap imagineable.

I would say worst case waves - 1.5 to 2 feet high. NOT vry often, average wave would be a foot, and there are al ot of calm days..... and of course, wake from other passing boats...

What is considered "too much" for a mooring?

I can easily drop a 250 pound weight out there with chain, and a buoy, etc..... then swmi out.. My only concern is how much can the boat take? (there are no other boats moored anywhere nearby - nor have I ever truly seen a boat on a mooring) thanks.
