Re: I was a bad boy today

I had a few minutes this morning to snap a few photos. I've been looking a while for a mariner that would make a good winter project. I wanted a center console for Delaware river and Bay fishing. It's just me, my son and dog. I even thought about converting a chieftain. I stumbled on this ad with no photos. I called and spoke with the owner. She said the boat, that she didn't know the make and thought it was fiberglass, was a complete mess and would need an entire rebuild. A couple of days went by and I decided to go look at it. I took all the necessary stuff tools wiring extra tires, grease gun, tie downs, the kitchen sink. Hour and a half drive. I picked up the owner and drove to the storage yard. At first blush it looked rough. The motor was to small for the boat. It had a broken skeg and was leaking oil out of the lower unit. The key was broken of in the ignition. I decided the motor was trash. And did not try to run it. I went with my project boat price-offer and asked if she would take $350. She said no but would take $400. We signed the papers and I went back to work on getting it ready to tow back home. Hooked it up and plugged in the lights they worked. Inspected the trailer and she was ready to roll. I took the back roads just in case something would happen while towing. It took me three hours to get back. I was wrong about all original I believe the two fold down seats have been replaced.

Nice project Gun dog. They must have got a good deal on the mashed pea interior materials . My chief has the same colour interior. You should have a lot of fun with it.

Congratulations and welcome to the fleet gundog:)

That's a really nice hull there, that splashwell design is superior to most of the Starcrafts out there.

That will be a nice CC for ya, good luck with the project!

I was poking around at the transom on lunch. The splash-well looks like it was set up for an I/O from the factory. Some how it did not get one. The wood is solid all the way around and has never been replaced. Unbelievable!

Huh???

IO's don't have splashwells, eh.

Have ya got some more photos?

Either way, your current set up is a good one. User friendly:)

Hey GD and welcome. Very nice holiday... and at a very nice bottom feeder friendly price too :D.... I actually like the 70's green. Kinda reminds me of many of the car colors back then too :D

Looks just like my 75 holiday. That boat actually doesnt need a lot of power, mine has a 70hp outboard and will hit 40mph trimmed just right. Plenty of power for a fishing boat and hardly uses any gas.

ssam boat as my 75 holiday 22 ft with 200 Johnson O/B. How about a run of the spalh well inside and outside. When you get time?? I have a full width seat with storace under it I took out for just my use and can put it back in about 20 min.I may be wrong but believe the splash well was a after market project. Very functional and looks good. How long is the boat?

Re: I was a bad boy today

The pea soup green is beginning to grow on me. I might leave it. A little oil staining on the inside of the transom. But solid. Check out the nut covers on the lower mounting bolts. Neat. I found the key but it's busted and the piece is missing. Looked in the switch it's not stuck in there. That's a plus. I was going to try to get the motor running. Called all the dealers in the area, closed for the weekend. I'm going to try to hot wire the terminals on the back of the switch any ideas as to what colors to start with?

I think you have a late 70's johnson. Try reading this thread if you have a red harness inside your cowling for your johnson. Shows how to jump start your motor.

I am also going to try this route with jump starting my motor when i get to it :D

I think it's an early to mid 70's Johnson. My dad has a 72 Johnson with the same color scheme.

It's a '73 Johnson. Good motor. I'd fix it and run it. Nice find for $350!

Re: I was a bad boy today

It's been a busy weekend trying to get the Holiday sea worthy. I'll set up a new thread as soon as I can figure out the ins and out of posting photos.

I found a key to replace the broken one. A one hour drive for a seven dollar key. My F250 gets nine mpg. Expensive key. I was excited to see if the motor would run. I wanted to hear it before I decided to go nuts with general maintenance. I cleaned the plugs, put on the muffs, hooked up the battery and dropped in a tank of 50/1. I held my breath, turned the key and tipped up the choke toggle. It took off. I was so surprised I forgot to breath. At that point I couldn't wait to get her in the water. I changed the gear oil and tied up a few wires then took a look under the hull. I found a few pin holes and quickly put a temporary patch on them. I called my friend to see if he could assist in the water test. He was more then happy to get on the water.

The launch went well. I was able to contain my excitement enough to remember to put in the plug. This motor is sweat. Idles perfect. Took it out in the channel, slight chop, brought it up to WOT the gps recorded 25 mph at 5300 rpm. That was against the wind and tide. We spun it around and with the wind and tide was able reach 28 mph at 5300 rpm. All said and done I was very happy with this boat. It took on about five gallons of water and used about three gallons of fuel within 6-8 miles, idling and testing. Ran out of fuel as we were pulling up to the dock.

Pugetsound, I'll get some splash well pictures posted soon. Starcraft 002.JPGStarcraft 001.JPG

Re: I was a bad boy today

thats awesome to see you got on the water so quick.

As for that splashwell I believe that is the original, it is exactly identical to the splash well on my holiday.
