Was working for the boat works in Daytona back in the days before the big town basin was put in and just after the red roofed condos were made.
The land next door had a ball field and was undeveloped. I used to ride my dirt bike there and fish for big fish and only get catfish there.
The Boat works was a cruiser dealer at the time.
The boss sent me and Pete down the Halifax river to get a boat back from a customer. I was told it was a good idea to bring bolt cutters and my tool box. That this was a no key job. Meaning I would need a couple of jumper wires and screw driver to fire her up.
As the taxi dropped us off on peninsula ave, almost at at the light house I started to get the feeling that this one was going to be different.
Different because the boat was chained and pad locked to the dock, no keys and a big dog running at us. Turned out that big dog was chicken of the long dock.
I told Pete to work on cutting the lock as I connected the jumper wire from the battery to the coil and hit the solenoid with my screw diver..Fired up no. 2 engine same way. Pete still trying to cut the chain..."Pete cut the lock not the chain" I yelled.
Just as Pete cut the Chain and I climbed up on the fly bridge, a man came running out and flapping his arms saying some thing I could net hear over the engines.
I cloud see he had a big belly, was in his under wear and had what appeared to be a 30-30 winchester.
"Pete, cut us loose from the dock" as Both engines dropped down to idle.
As I looked up I saw a puff of smoke and then crack....beeeeeow...the sound of a .30 bullet whizzing over head. Then another making a splash higher than the boat.
Both engines full throttle off the dock, spin and full throttle out of there as our wake caused birds to fly as we powered out of his little cove and around the corner headed north up the Halifax.
I noticed we had some big vibration coming from our starboard engine. "Pete take a look at the engine" Pet yelled up, "were taking on water at the strut and shes shaking up pretty bad, this guy must have ran the thing on the sand bar, we are sinking"
Pete had read hair and thick glasses, he looked real red and scared.
I had Pete take both engine inlet lines off the thru hull fittings and used the engines to pump out the boat.
We made it home and hauled the boat to fine a bullet hole in the side window and a starboard prop that looked like a rose bud.
Next day I told the boss that I was going to stick to mechanical work and diving only from now on.
