Hello All,

First thing first, if you look up Can't get outboard to WOT under Johnson & Evinrude Outboard Troubles/Repair, that was my posting. It ended in a very, very happy ending for me, and so I am going to take on a much bigger and much more rewarding task of rebuilding an older smoker-craft boat from top to bottom...

Here is where this awesome forum comes into play...LOL! You guys were awesome in fixing my old outboard...and now I have to ask you guys to help me with this work. I will be putting lots and lots of pictures on here so people can learn a great deal from this. As well as leaving this as a guide to help many people in there dreams or doing such rewarding work as restoring an old boat.

So I will install some pictures of the original boat, and you guys can start to give me direction of how to start this restoration project. I have some simple questions for you to begin with.

1) How do you paint the hull while it is on the trailer?

2) Is it worth stripping the whole boat down, or can you scuff the paint, and use zinc chromate to prep the worn off paint areas.

3) What is the best way to get an old 85Hp Evinrude 1972 outboard off the transom?

Lets start with these questions and then we can go from there...here are the pics before starting...LOL!

This is the motor that I was told was in running order. I haven't run it ...yet... so unknown to me whether it runs or not. It is a 1972 85Hp Evinrude selectric outboard.

Looks like a fun project.
I would think that a boat is not a very good place to store snow even if it is aluminum. LOL Do you have any indoor storage space available?
I would take the boat off the trailer to work on. Would be way easier to paint. It looks like the motor has a lifting hook. Rent a cherry picker and your set.

1) Should I use the cherry picker to remove the motor, or the boat off the trailer?

2) If the cherry picker is for the motor, how do I remove the boat?

Cherry picker is for the motor. Build or buy a motor stand and park the motor on it for a while. You will have lots of work to do on the boat. Some where here their is a really good post on removing a boat from a trailer. But with it empty lower the trailer tongue, block up the transom then raise the tongue. Now at this point I was able to slide my trailer out from under the boat and placed it on some wide saw horses. May need 2 people. When the trailer was almost all the way out I raised the tongue to lower the bow onto the saw horse. I really didn't have to lift the boat. Just use the trailer to do the lifting.

Re: I will need lots of help restoring older boat...

1) Was it as easy to get the boat back on the trailer, after?

2) Did you paint the boat while it was on blocks?

3) How did you paint the parts of the boat that were under the blocks?

4) Did you have it safe enough to climb aboard the boat while it was on blocks?

5) Was the blocks just in place to paint the hull, then replace the boat on the trailer to work on the inside?

A) Does anyone know where to get the paint codes for Lund paint color?

B) I am looking for Arctic White color code and Quicksilver color code from Lund!

Thanks to all who are helping me....

I have not finished work on the hull yet. I hope it will go back on that easy. I plan on flipping it over this weekend to prep and paint the bottom. The boat is a tri-hull so I have it sitting on 2 - 7 foot long saw horses, very stable. I re-built the transom, prepped for paint and replaced the seat bases all on the horses.
After the paint is done I plan to re-load the stripped hull then re-install all the rigging, seats, motor, etc.

Looks like a great project Saskatoon. My next one will be a be a bow rider like that. Whats the length on it? I'd kill for that lovely power tilt and trim unit you have on there! You will find an aluminum boat to be much easier to restore compared to what these fiberglass guys are going through. I don't know how they do it. I did my floor and interior when I first got my boat and this spring I'll be doing the transom. Good luck and I look forward to watching your progress.

This is how I dealt with getting my motor off. I kinda hung it from the back of my garage. I just raised the lowered the front of the boat to get it off and on. I did this by myself.

here you go:

Getting Boat Off Trailer

you don't need stands.

1/you can lower the tongue to the ground. i would get some 6x6 or old railroad crossties cut the +- 12 inches, now block up the transom. 2/

Raise the tongue of the trailer the back of trailer will drop away from trailer. this is the tricky part. between the cross braces of the trailer block the keel lower trailer, boat will be suspended on the blocks.

3/ pull forward, lift bow again, and reblock i a different place. repeat until trailer is out from under the boat.

4/ to reload, just reverse the procedure.

if you were just working on the bunks, or painting the bottom. you could just do the first 2 steps.

Okay, those are awesome replies. I also just received an email back from Lund Boats with the paint codes for the colors I am looking for.

(1) Arctic White - DCC 90271

(2) Quicksilver - HSL 3580

These colors come off the 2008 paint scheme for Lund 1700 Pro Sport.

I love this boat, and is kinda what I am looking to build my boat after...LOL!

I will include more photos very soon as, spring has kinda sprung and I have shoveled out the boat....you will be able to see more....LOL!

I also received a price of $85.99 from tcoutboards for a new "selectric" control which I will need.

I add as much price information and codes so people who like my boat when it is done, have a idea what it will cost to build it.

Someone asked me what length my boat was? It is 17feet long. You may think I payed too much for it, but I paid $2600.00...and I imagine that I will be paying quite a lot more to finish it. I imagine the total cost of thie boat to be around $5000 - $6000. But to buy a boat like this brand new? $40,000.

Re: I will need lots of help restoring older boat...

I think the hardest part of dealing with a boat restoration revolves around the workspace you have to do it. I unfortunately have to do all my work outside, but I have my whole backyard to take it apart, etc. I can't/won't flip my boat because it is too heavy, and too weak without the cap on it. I'd have to build a device to rotate it like they have professionally ( not going to happen ).

That's a nice looking boat though, and the first thought through my head was "easy!" Kinda wish I had a 'luminum, but I love the lines of my boat better than those.

If you plan to paint the boat yourself, using the roll and tip method, you can certainly just block the boat and paint it. You can finish painting the areas the blocks blocked once you have it back on the trailer, and since you have a roller trailer, it should be fairly easy to do. You'll definitely want to use a high quality paint and make sure you get an awesome bond with the aluminum to avoid those rollers from wearing the paint off too quickly.

Seems though that you have mostly dock rash and years of wear. I'd love to see it without the snow. Guess we'll have to wait for more pictures!

Should look nice updating an old ride to mimic a new one. I should play with photoshop and see if I can't come up with a better idea of what I want to do with my boat....

Here is a shop crane I found at a local Princess Auto, it has a range of 8' height to lift the motor....does this seem like a good idea? I mean for lifting the motor on and off?

Thanks,

Bought one of those to do the motor in the ex's car. Awesome tool to have around. Used it to take the motor off my boat too, just have to be creative in how you secure it.
