I6 Distributor Timing? No Marking On Decal?

1979 inline 6 90 HP motor. I reinstalled my distributor and went to fire it up and it fires but goes out as soon as it kicks over. I think I messed up the timing between the distributor and the belt/flywheel.

I'm reading the book now, it says turn the arrow on the distributor towards the "3 vertical dots on the timing decal". I don't have 3 vertical dots on my timing decal. I have a thick black line between 0 and 2 Degrees, and 27, 23, and 21 degrees. I also have a dot with "464" marked by it. I assume that the 464 mark is .464" BTDC, and that I time it to the 21 degree mark for max advance, but which one of these marks am I supposed to point toward the distributor shaft? I'm going to try the mark between 0 and 2 out of curiosity but if that doesn't do it, then I'm really lost.

Any help guys?

On my '74 I6 flywheel, the 3 dots are on the right edge of the decal with a line through them. I believe some of the earlier ones only had 1 dot, but yours should be the same as mine...

Re: I6 Distributor Timing? No Marking On Decal?

After browsing for an hour or so, I found a couple of threads I found really useful. I guess the ideas is that the "3 dots" point at the dist. shaft when the #1 piston is at TDC. Just to be really sure, I took some electrical tape and wrapped it around the spindle housing on my dial indicator and screwed it carefully into #1 - worked pretty good, since I don't have the proper fitting to install the indicator in a sparkplug hole. Beats a screwdriver though, I guess.

Turns out my pointer is pretty accurate, but the (single) punchmark on the flywheel is sorta off, as is the .464" mark. I ended up pointing the arrow towards the crank with #1 at TDC, which is really close to the punchmark pointing at the distributor, but a little off. I'm assuming that it's supposed to align as #1 is at TDC, right?

The nib at the bottom of the dist pully will line up with the nib on the block just as the motor approaches TDC on #1. (usually about 2-4 degrees BTDC)

-W

Re: I6 Distributor Timing? No Marking On Decal?

Hey guys, do you have an idea where a healthy 90 I6 would idle at, timing wise? Mine seems to like to idle around the vincinity of 10ATDC? I thought I heard somebody mentioning theirs idling around 0 (TDC?), but that doesn't seem right to me for a few reasons.

I'm doing the timing and synch thing, it's a little scary for a first timer like me. Thanks again, couldn't do it without your help!

I think it will idle at 1-3 BTDC at 600-650 RPM'S.
At any higher RPM'S that will change.
