I6 replacement

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone has put a I6 in thier boat inplace of the 4 banger? The reason I am asking is I have found a couple of boats at a decent price with serviced outdrive and the motors do run according to the adds. I really want to replace the outdrive from the motor back and these would do it. Just not sure how hard it would be to put the I6 in my boat or if my 4 banger would drive that outdrive. Am thinking that it was be geared to high for the 4.

Sorry I have not been on for a while, had to go to Amsterdam for work and no access on company laptop to be able to make posts here.

I think that's a fairly easy swap with minimal fabrication. I could be wrong though. You'd get a better response in the I/O forum.

I am thinking that the front mount is a piece of cake to fab up going from the 4 to I6. I think the hitch will be compatibility between the I6 and the OD that was hooked to the 4 banger. Course you go with a new (used) I6 and a new OD from SEI to match you'd be in business and have a great combo!

(The fellas over on the IO section will surely give ya good advice)

Re: I6 replacement

jason, I think one of kelly's goals was a different drive as well so that's a non-issue.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=458379 link to post in I/O section.

Go for it. Anything that produces more power gets two thumbs up from me. Turbocharger, go for it. Supercharger go for it. Port, polish, stroke and bore, go for it.

Re: I6 replacement

I personally would stick with the 4 because the 6 adds weight and takes up room.
My 4 does 28mph and cruises at 20mph nicely in a 21 foot cheiftain, no speed demon but good fishing rig. I would not want the 6 because of the room it takes up in the back.

I was thinking the same thing there Elkhunter, but I am finding it easier to find the I6's than it is a 4 banger for some reason. I want a new outdrive setup for my rig and it is just easier to get the whole boat.

Ez is right Jason, I am looking at a whole setup or boat as the case may be. I do agree with what you are saying with putting an I6 on a 4 cylinder outdrive, not a good thing I don't think. But I want something with tilt and trim on it and mine does not and besides all of my hydrolics are shot to begin with. Otherwise I would probably go with the SEI setup.

Cool man! Yah, I think picking up a donor boat with a complete driveline would be about the best use of your time and money. Trying to piece the whole thing together can break the bank. Also, going with the I6 over the V6 would avoid an installation headache.

Looking forward to seeing what you put together my friend!

I am pretty sure that there is no way that this boat is going to be ready for spingers this year. It will not fit in the garage and as you know the weather around here has not been the best to work on a boat outside. And I really hate working on anything while it is raining that is for sure. And I cannot modify my garage as the landlords would really frown on me doing so. But I do still have my SeaNymph that I can take springer fishing if I have to. But also have a buddy with a 17 ft boat that we use a lot for salmon fishing as well.

Yea I was thinking it would be a whole lot cheaper. Can pick the boat up with running I6 and serviced outdrive for under $500 which looks like a pretty good deal. It may even have a belly tank in it as well and that would be really cool to put in the big girl.

More speed, a guy can't go wrong. Longer doghouse, you can always fish on the sides of it. I think it's a good idea.

Be careful about taking any advice from me when there is speed involved. Speed is my drug, I crave it, I need it, I long for it. He$$ if the doghouse on my boat extended to the captains chair I'd do it for more speed!

Absolutely get the I6. There is NO down side to more power. Storm on the horizon, answer more power. Pirates coming, more power. The boat in Jaws (Orca?) would not have sunk if....... that's right, she only had more power.

Re: I6 replacement

There are I-6 chevy blocks in pickup trucks and the I4's are only used in forklift, gensets, boats and other non hwy rigs.
If the I-6 will bolt up to the 4cylinder outdrive I bet you could run a 4 blade 21 or 22 pitch prop and be good enough might still beable to over rev the engine but I would guess the rpms would be reasonable.
I could not find a rebuildable 4cylinder block so I had to buy a new complete crate engine ran $3000.

Who says I/O are expensive?? A complete new engine for $3000. They would not even take that much for a down payment on one of them new fangled O/B's.

Re: I6 replacement

You're comparing a motor price to a whole power package price. Compare an I/O motor price to an outboard powerhead price and they get a little closer. I/O's will still come out ahead especially the higher you get in HP but lets at least make it a fair fight!

Re: I6 replacement

We kinda never stopped. We'll stop when the weather warms and we can start fishing and working on our boats again. We are now in our cabin fever stage of winter. Spring is close, I'm starting to take inventory of my fishing stuff. Pike and sucker fishing in the rivers soon.

Until then it's on like Donkey Kong. Get 'em Jas and Glenn.

Re: I6 replacement

Years ago, long before I really knew all that much about boats we took a V8 Chevy engine and put it in place of a 2.5L Chevy engine in a 16 Chaparral bowrider a buddy had. The 4 cylinder was lame and wouldn't get the boat much over 28mph, so we go the bright idea of using an old Corvette engine he had there. We fabbed up an aluminum adapter plate, glassed in a few new mounts and flipped a set of headers right out the back and fabbed up a water pump to draw in seawater. (No boat manifolds, no drive pump, just the engine being cooled. The drive lasted about a week. Round two gave the boat a newer drive meant for a V8, or at least one that originally had a V8 in front of it.
It was only a 16' glass boat, so it sat more than a little low in the stern at rest and stopping meant being very careful to not get swamped by your own wake.
There was no GPS then so we could only guess top speed, which was well over 60 judging by passing traffic along one length of the river. We finally put the boat in an early grave after rigging up a 125hp nitrous oxide shot to it one weekend, we made a few insane runs with it before it broke a piston and died. It never saw the water again after that, but after the few months of absolute abuse, the rest of the boat wasn't far behind either. That was over 25 years ago.
