I posted a similar topic in the dockside chat area and some of us thought it would be very appropriate to also ask the question to our great members up here in the engine topics as well. Once again, thanks for your countless hours helping so many boaters with engine questions/problems! Your valuable service does get noticed!!! Thanks.

I thought it might be a refreshing idea for the all of us to post why we enjoy coming here day after day, month after month, etc.

As for me, I work here. :)

If we ( techs and Manufacturers) want to understand the problems and concerns of the consumers then we need to listen and communicate. It also gives us a chance to correct misconceptions.

Re: iboats engine techs, why do you stay on iboats?

Been around boats/aircraft all my life. I like to help when I can . Hope I do? Anyway most problems are things that have been seen by me or other techs here that are simple (most times). Im not made of money so I understand my fellow boater wants to keep his cost down so we can boat another day. Plus I love to troubleshoot things...It makes me try to use my hard head :)

If a TECH is someone that does this for a living, then I shouldnt post, but if a TECH is a person that has been there done that and has a lot of technical background then I would qualify. I too like to try and straighten out all the missinformation that abounds, and let people know that there are actually products that are better than the manufacture of motors sell. Ill be the ginny pig and let others know the results.

Im not bias, even though I have favorites, I try to post just the facts, even though I cant allways back them up.

Unlike LD I AM biased. :) (Joke, LD, only a joke)

I have been in love with machinery and technology of any kind all my life. That's been a while. I learned a thing or three about boats and outboards in the 65 years before I came here and I have more than doubled that since.

My greatest satisfaction in life has been to learn and inform. . . teach and write. . . on technical subjects. iboats allows me to do that. Now that I am retired iboats has become a new career and a new group of thousands of good friends with like interests.

Now who could leave that?

ps ...

JB, are you gonna move this to dockside chat since its "technically" nothing to do about "general outboard discussions"?

i had to say it :)

Well, PMM, I think it does have to do with engines, since it specifically addresses the helpers who answer engine problems and questions.

If that isn't enough reason to keep it here, it was posted by the proprietor of this establishment.

'Nuff said?? :)

My experience with iboats has been that you give some, but you get a lot more. I can't begin to list all the things I've learned from others even after a lifetime around boats.

I get better information here than I do from my dealers technician. The wealth of knowledge here about boating is the best kept secret in the industry. I try to encourage everyone I know who loves boating to check out this site. It is truly great and without the people here I would be at the marinas mercy in regard to just about everything. Thanks Iboats

Re: iboats engine techs, why do you stay on iboats?

Stumbled across the site and it caught my eye. Started looking and reading from the various forums and figured I could help a little and learn a lot. So far....I've helped a little and learned a ton.

But I really think that what keeps' us coming back is the folks....techs...if you will, that are so willing to share there expertise, wether small or large and make you feel "at home" with any question you may have.

Do I love boats, boating, marine engines? Yeah....guess you could say that. :) Now if the weather would co-operate and the river get back to normal......Know whut uh mean Vern??

Re: iboats engine techs, why do you stay on iboats?

When I was 4 or 5 years old my Grandad would get me to go out to the garage to "help" him - actually it was the bonding thing I think. Anyway I would sit on a box holding a coffee can where he put bolts, nuts & stuff as he worked on his 37 or 34 Ford. As the years flew by I had to learn to fix a few things here and there as there was no $ to have the professional wrenches do things.

That "fix-it-yourself" attitude carried over to my first boat almost 35 years ago. I am a driveway wrench and enjoy reading the problems folks encounter. Sometimes I will jump in if I think I may have a clue on what is going on or have encountered a simular problem. Often I just read and learn.

Some folks watch TV, some read, some drink - - yada - yada - For me this is fun and I enjoy pitching in when I can.

Sounds like we have some folks that think that giving is more important than receiving.

That is a good thing indeed and representative, in my opinion, of many boaters.
