I'm totally green to boats evenmore so to restoration. I always wanted to own a boat and spend time on the water. I saw this boat in someone's yard and purchased it for $200 W/trailer. After reading and researching a bit I believe this boat could be a 60's glasstron.

It's a sears serial# NT54R 0628
Model# 811.651410
45 OBC

It appears that the decking needs replacing, complete re-wiring, gas tank, seating and an outboard etc.
I've become obsessed with knowing all the details of restoring it (not to it's original . I'm very handy and mechanically inclined not to mention very optimistic. I'm stuck with questions like:

1 Do I need to prep. my new decking with something to secure seats to? if so, how?
2 What kind of steering and are there step by steps intructions?
3 what size gas tank
My initial plan is to strip it of all its hardware and start sanding and repairing the decking. Ultimately, I want all new Everything in it. Hope the pics. help

just want to say that I have read some threads here and find you guys to be very knowledgeable, sincere and funny. I's a great site!

Well it will be tough to ID as there were literally hundreds of companies making little runabouts like that in the 60's. Some only made a handful of boats. You need to head down to the restoration section and check out some of the projects going on there. Here's one going on currently on a similar boat http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=365820

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I'm as green as they come in boats or boat restoratioe, I certainly have way more motivation than experience. I'm gonna continue to do alot of research thru the threads here which are so informative.
You guys seem to be a bunch of good guys, great boating community! I take plenty of pics as i go along and I'm sure I'll have more questions. Thanks again for replying and thanks to all those who have taking time out to post all their info.

Re: ID and restoration help (please)!

your going to need to install a pulley steering system, sorry I dont have any pics but I have the same kind of boat which also has no make anywhere on it,and as for the gas tank I would suggest a 25 ltr. tank, and if you also need an ignition dont make the same mistake as me get the 6 position ign, it will make installation much easier

Need list of boat components

Need list of boat components

Thanks, I was wondering about the gas tank size and the ignition info. will help as I didn't know the diffrence. Is it possible someone could help me make a list as to what all the components i need to plan for as I'm restoring the boat completely?

For instance:
1. gas tank 2. ignition
3 tachometer 4. voltmeter
5. bilge pump 6 . battery
7. speedometer 8. switches
9. lights 10. steering system
11. seats and outboard engine

Guys am I missing anything, I'm just trying to plan every thing carefully with a one plan of action. Been on a boat just a few times but never paid attention to details like that. What I listed here I learned on this site. I know it's alot but with out you guys I couldn't even dream of taking on this project.
And I like the fact that I'm doing it from scratch, as this makes me dig in to boat facts versus just buying and boating without knowing the nuts and bolts.

Advice and recommendations very much welcomed.

By the way, it's a 14' runabout haven' been able to positively ID it yet. Can I upgrade from the old pulley system to that teleflex you guys talk about? It may be easy easier since I'm doing a total restoration.

Yes you can. I'm in the process of doing that to mine.

If that's a Glastron it could have been from the same paint and hull scheme as my Dad's 1966 16 footer which he bought used in 1974. It had red & white seats, a wraparound windshield and was pushed by an 85 hp Evinrude.
Boy did I have fun in that boat. Thank God it didn't draw much water, you would not believe the navigation mistakes I made.

That was funny. I've done alot of research and the closest I could come is a 64 or 68 Glastron. I've seen many pics. others come close but when you look at the details like original Nav. lights, shape, paint it's the conclusion I've come. Of course that's subject to change.

Re: ID and restoration help (please)!

Before you start outfitting that little guy, you'd better start with the boat itself. First off, you gonna check that transom for dry rot. Take a small core sample from the inside, I'd bet the wood under that fibreglass is pooched. Or you could pull that cap off, but it'll only show the wood at the top of transom. If there was a small hole seeping at the bottom, then the wood would rot upwards first. Then you're gonna want to get under that floor as most likely the stringer(s) are rotted too. Again refer the restoration section for details on this. The saving grace is that with the smaller boat it's a smaller job. I'd seperate the top and bottom of the thing and completely restore/repaint her if I was that way motivated. Fiberglass work is fun...lols..well not for me...

Boat gear?

Boat gear?

Your right, My first step will be inpect it thru and thru and whatever it takes I will do. Your right again, because its a small boat it seems so doable. After doing some reading here I had come to realize that you could seperate the top from the bottom. It may sound crazy but I look forward to the entire process. Could this be love?:D

Since I'm a green horn I thought i would prepare ahead of time for my outfitting. Also, i did not know if i had to do any prep. work during the innitial boat repairs to recieve any of the equiptment that would be intalled later on

Sears Roebuck & Co. sold "Elgin" boats during the late 50's to early 60's. They were manufactured exclusively for Sears by Angler Boat Co, a sister company of Penn Yan Boats of New York. Angler also made "SeaKing" boats exclusively for Montgomery Ward. They sold 14' and 16' models in stripped to loaded options. Try theclassicboathouse (.com) and browse the gallery for pics of both types. Also, try xxx.martyonline.com/sears-elgin/ ... to see a sales brochure for Elgin boats. Check out the prices...lol. That'll be a fun boat when you get it done. Enjoy !!!

Also remember one thing, it's a labor of love, you won't make your money back like you would with a classic car.

Re: ID and restoration help (please)!

keep it simple; it's a small boat and it will have a small motor. Here's how to cut down your list:
1. gas tank 1 or 2 portable 6 gallons, slide under the splashwell. 2 x 6 is better than 1x12 b/c you can leave one out for short trips.
2. ignition pull start if <25 hp
3 tachometer unnecessary--use your ears.
4. voltmeter unnecessary
5. bilge pump yes with float switch. One is all you need--carry a bailer, too
6 . battery only for bilge pump and lights, so if you have a pull-start, consider a trolling battery to save size and weight.
7. speedometer unnecessary and seldom accurate. If you get a GPS it will serve.
8. switches One for lights, one for pump
9. lights good idea. You already have a bow light, and probably a stern light fixture. For style, see if you can fix up the original, or go to the boat junk yard.
10. steering system See other comments. There is a safety issue with pully systems, which is why we don't have them any more.
11. seats depends on if you want original or something new and functional. If the latter, get 2 pedestal seats, leaves some room in the back. Not much room for more than 2 people. Those back to back fold down seats don't last and take up a lot of room.
and outboard engine--move this to the top of the list. Price motors now before you put your $$ into the boat to be sure you can afford the whole package. Your purchase price was only a down payment.

Re: ID and restoration help (please)!

thank you guys!!! I have done some price comps. on the motor and I was thinking of buying one off season since this season will be all restoration. Do you think I'll get a MUCH better price? What advice can you give me pertaining to the purchase of a motor?

I thought about a slightly used one but not sure. But if it has to be new I will be ready by the time the season ends. BTW can I pull a tube or a wake boarder on this, if so...how much horsepower? The info on the boat reads 45Hp.

Thank you all for taking your time out.

Re: ID and restoration help (please)!

Have you seen the prices of NEW outboards?

A good used Johnson/Evinrude or Mercury 50HP should be able to be acquired to $1-1.5k and will serve you well.

Yeah, i feel as though if anything when I graduate to something bigger, one of my kids can inherit the little runabout that got me started. Hopefully they will begin on their journey in the love of "boat fun"
