I just purchased a 2001 Starcraft 18ft bow ryder with a mercruiser 4.3 and Alpha 1 sterndrive. Trying to identify the powertrain so as to replace the engine which was full of water yea as in crankcase full of water. I gave just a few pennies for it and the boat is in great shape. The model and serial numbers on top of the breather cap are just unreadable. Nothing has been changed on the boat sience new. Could anyone tell me where else to look on this engine to identify it or is the year model and 4.3 litre all I need to replace it.

Look for a ID plate above the starter, otherwise look at the link below in the Adults only section

The engine is a basic Chevy 4.3 engine - used in a lot of trucks and mini vans. Just get an appropriate vintage engine and transfer your externals onto it. Make sure the core plugs are brass, and if not change them out.

Ayuh,.... I'm guessin' it's a 2000/ 2001 motor, 'n drive,.... which would fall into the '96 to present vintage window of the 4.3l,...

Just finished with the engine teardown and everything looks new, other than three cracks in the block two in the valley and one clean thru from the water jacket to the middle cly starboard side of block. That was the one cyl that had low compression. Was glad to find out why. My question is do any of you guys know where to find a Mercruiser reman block from. I would like to find one ready to build. Im sure I can buy a 4.3 from LKQ but then when I got it installed their would be one bolt whole the truck engine would not have and I would have to pull it back out. Also no one seems to know for sure if truck engines are the same. What have you guys that build your own engine done in the past. Engine tag by starter is M039038

I would just look in a junk yard. The Astro/Safari vans of 97+ were Vortec. Around here they can be had for $150 if you pull it. Change the core plugs and you are good. I would pick the one that looks wrecked so you know the engine is not the reason it is in the junk yard.
