I bought a 1990 Johnson 175. The insurance company wants a motor ID number. I looked all over the mounting bracket, under the cowl, etc. and I can't find any sort of an ID plate. Where do I look?

Re: ID number

Look for a welch plug on the block. The model number should be stamped in it.

Re: ID number

What is a welch plug? Where is it on the block? And is this "Model #" the "ID #?"

Re: ID number

Welsh plug is a round aluminum dome, about an inch in diameter, usually on the top side or front of the power head. Might have the model number and the serial number on it.

If it doesn't have one, engrave a unique number into the powerhead with an engraving tool. Use a number like half your drivers license number and your first name spelled backwards.
What they want is an id number that is unique and specific to that motor in case it is stolen and needs to be identified if recovered.
