Hi. I would like your opinion. I'm thinking to screwed a context base and fitting an small (1 gal) external fuel tank on the top of outboard engine lid . Is a small 5hp tohatsu 4stroke. I want to win some space (my boat is only 10ft).It's problem with temperatures from engine or sun? Or others problem? The drilling is easy? Οfcaurse i insulation the lid after drilling.

If your current engine in use is a DS or DL 5 HP model the tank is incorporated inside the engine and it's by gravity, does not have a vacuum fuel pump, understand your interior max space availability, but technically won't gain a thing placing extra tank under a seat as you would need a fuel pump for engine to work. If placing on top engine, cowl is round, not rectangular for ease of fitness, larger external tank will need to have a pressure relief valve, with sun will inflate bigger than a piggy :D With factory internal fuel tank 1.3 Lt capacity, can boat more than 1/2 hour at wot.

Happy Boating

Doesn't sound like a good idea to me....I'd look at constructing or relocating the fuel tank inside the boat to give you more space. Perhaps under the seats or on the deck with some type of reinforcement that would allow you to stand on top of it without damage.

As Elvin said... Use the Factory parts. Be sure to specify precise model/serial to get the right parts. The MFS4/5/6 has a pushrod-driven fuel pump; can be setup with internal tank; can also have an internal tank shutoff **** that would allow the use of a quick-connected external tank, or "dual tanks".

The motor i nsf5b and not have and no support internal tank. I ask the company for that. Maybe the new 6hp model. I think its not by gravity because i have a portable tank placed lower from engine and works fine. Yes, a solution <under the seats> is very good idea. More hours of work to construct it (i must cut & build fiberglass/polyester) but safer . Thanks all.

Any NSF 4/5/6 can use the internal tank kit -- comes stock on the 4, available as an option on the new 6. If you have the non-internal-tank top cowl, you will need to cut the hole for the gas cap. Ask your dealer for the internal tank parts -- tank, cap, mounting bolts/bushings, check valve, gas ****, and fuel hoses.

If it's a 4stroke, there's no internal gas tank stock, and I didn't think you could get the much smaller 3hp cover to fit (edit...see above me). I'd agree with everyone else, however, and figure out a way to tuck the tank under an existing seat, etc., because the exposure to sun and water is probably a lot more than want to get into. Look around at different style tanks, however or better yet, get someone to fabricate a tank that's shaped like a briefcase, for example, to take up less room.

Re: idea for more space

There's seems to bee some cunfusion here. The 4/5/6 HP Tohatsu (Nissan and Mercury) engine is in the same engine "family". It's the exact same block and frame across all three models.

The 4 HP came with an internal tank and a the connection for an external tank. The 5 and 6 HP model only had the external tank. Parts can be shared between all three models.

The internal tank that comes with the 4 HP can be fitted to the 5 and 6 HP models. There's even a kit for it. Off the top of my head you need the internal tank, a new hood, the tank valve, and fuel lines.

There's also an alternator kit available that comes optional with the 6 HP that can be fitted to the 4 and 5 HP.

Your idea of a putting a gas can on top of the engine seems unsafe. I would reccomend you refit your motor with the internal tank kit.
