I have a 1988 Mariner 90. it has the oil injection system on it. I took it to a local boat mechanic for a tune up and he informed me that the oil pump had frozen and "wiped out" the drive gear on the crankshaft. his recommendation was either a new power head $$$ or a new motor to the tune of 8k. I have talked with a few other mechanics and they suggested going premix and deleting the oil injection system all together. I have searched the internet trying to find more information about this and whether it is really a feasible way to go.
The motor is on a 1988 playcraft pontoon boat 24ft. I am located in the foothills of northern California near Chico. this boat sits 11'7" tall on the trailer and would rather not take it too far if I don't have to.
Thank you for your input.

Lock off the injection system components and go 50:1 pre-mix, no problems. Also, if you have one, disconnect the oil warning module.

Test compression , if that is good then just run the motor on 50:1 mix.------Not much else to do since pump is not turning.

Is there an alternative I should be looking at? like a different style of oil pump? something 12V dc powered? or is going premix really my best option. Thank you for the above responses. I appreciate the assistance.

I myself would double check the mechanics findings as oil pump/gear failures on oil pump bottom driven motors are really rare.. If it did fail it happened between last time ran and when mechanic looked at it as if earlier it would have locked up from lack of oil.
