Does anyone know if a 1985 1258X5A (which I own) and a 1986 1251X65 are identical? I can get the 1251X65 for parts, it has zero compression in the second cylinder from the top. Everything else looks real clean and well taken care of. Secondly, what does a parts engine typically sell for, obviously there is going to be some attempt at negotiating? Thanks, Eric

Not exactly identical, more like very close fraternal twins. But close enough for government work. Just about anything you could want to swap is interchangeable.

Engine that old and not running--- IF YOU ARE DESPERATE-- no more than a couple of hundred to 250. Yeah, he is going to tell you the lower unit is worth more and the power trim (if it has it) is also worth more so go up to MAYBE 300 if you really, really want it. But: make him understand that the lower unit could be crap and power trim units are notorious for failing and really difficult to get apart.

Understand, that the price of junk engines is very variable depending upon how desperate the seller is and if he has had any other replies. Also understand that no engine NEEDS to be bought--don't get emotional and be prepared to walk away.

As an example, I got three junkers from a dealer for 350 and my 150 five cylinder with two bad pistons cost me 300. I also recently went down to Jersey and bought three non-running 85s for 85 bucks.

Thanks Frank for your advice. I have an 89 125 that has a few parts that I have already borrowed from. Got the 89 for 100 bucks because my Dad is 84 years old and graduated from the University of Negotiations and Cheapskatedness (a lost art among us younger folk) This guy with the engine is asking 350. I already have another lower unit, the packs are the same, have already taken the choke solenoid and a few other necessary things. Unless he gets down in the 100 buck range I will probably pass. Having two spares in the garage might cause a marital rift and with five kids the child support would be un-imaginable.
Thanks again! Eric
