Identification Number Help

Hello everyone,

I have been in the boating scene for nearly 40 years but have not had much experience with the classic old school motors as we have used mostly newer and big (200 hp) motors for waterskiing.

I have always wanted a garage to house old outboard motors and memorabilia dating back to the 40s or earlier.

Well, today I picked up an old Evinrude outboard motor that a neighbor basically put at his curbside.

It is an old Speed Twin. The VIN # on it is 6039 24228.

Can someone help with what the last 5 digits mean? I know the 039 is the model number but curious as to what year this motor was made.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Identification Number Help

The model 6039 Speeditwin 22.5 hp was made 1939-1950 (except for the WWII years). Serial number 24228 was made in 1949.

EDIT: Evidently, you must not have joined the Antique Outboard Motor Club yet? www.aomci.org If you aren't ready to join yet, at least take in a few local meets. The annual international grand daddy of all meets is coming up this week, August 1 thru 4, (2012) at Tomahawk Wisconsin. More motors, parts, and stuff than you can imagine.
