identify horsepower and make

need to find the horsepower and year of a evinrude/johnson motor. the identification plate was removed. is there anyway to determine the difference between a 120 or 140 h.p. by a indivdual part #. the motor is suppose to be around 1994 yr. the freeze plug has stamped number G3939604. Is there any way to determine the make of this engine. It has been repainted .

the welch plug can tell you the year.though not the only reason ,one reason plates are removed is because it was stolen at one time.the motor that is.

Call Evinrude customer service with that serial number and see if the records are available to show a model number.

There are a few parts differences between the motors, but you cannot notice as they all look alike. Internal measurements, such as carb bores, are different but those specs are not published. Everything is by part number.

There was a complete ignition redesign for 1988 so that can be a way to find out if the motor is older or newer than that.
