Identify my 1963 carburetor, please?

My engine is a 1963 40 HP Gale "Sea King" model no. GG18805A and SN 36X883461. The carburetor is no. 30402 and I have no reason to believe it isn't original. I'm getting a lot of sputtering either in a tub or in the water with a tremendous hp loss behind weight (of course), probably only about 5 - 10 mph.
The motor starts perfectly on the 1st try every time so the only problem I have is steady running. It has set for a number of months before I bought it last week. Before I venture out with a rebuild kit (I have rebuilt a Holley 350 years ago for a car) I thought maybe I'd just run some Sea Foam through her or pull the carb and soak it in a cleaner. What's the best 1st step and if I need to get a kit, what type of carb is it? Thanks!

These carburetors are very simple. They're no trouble to rebuild and it's always worth pulling them apart for cleaning rather than attempting a mechanic-in-a-bottle.
Get a carb kit from your local dealer, since it's only a couple dollars more expensive than the aftermarket one but (ought to) come with a new plastic float to replace the troublesome cork one.
If you want to have a p/n in hand when you go to the dealer, take a photo of your carb and post it here and we can identify it for you & cross it to a J/E engine. There were a few different choke designs depending on model, but I'll bet you have the simplest - manual or manual/electric.

I'll bet your power loss problem is loosing a cylinder though. Try to see if you can draw sparks 3/8" long from each plug lead.

Hey Paul, (or anyone), do you think the Seloc book on Evinrudes would be a good guide for my Gale since they're so similar? Or would you recommend the Clymer "Old Outboard Motor Service Manual" which is so far the only book I've found for it specifically.
