Re: identify my carb for rebuild

Looks more like a Mercarb (one idle mixture screw)....

The service manual for that series of engine (1985-1989) only shows the Mercarb, but the parts manual (1983-1989) also shows the Rochie. Use the manual to identify the carb, as per page 5C-1 in manual #10. Post the carb part number and we can identify for you... (and your engine serial number)

Re: identify my carb for rebuild

i just cant read the serial number sticker. i can read the transom and drive but not the middle sticker.
it has all the other info like spark plug, hp, yr and all that but the top right corner has a white stripe but cant read it at all.
so far all i have is this:

driver serial no Oc78 34 56

on the block (port side) is says:
G21277
42673
2
C1

on the flame arrester you see in the pic above:
FACET
ZENITH USA
A125-65
USCG APPD
162041 197 2
Mercruiser 85784

question:
can i just unbolt the 4 nuts that hold the carb to the block itself???
will that be enough to just pull it out then slowly work on disassembling everything to rebuild??? -

Well, it's certainly a mercarb.
Did you pursue the link that achris provided? It has step by step guidance!

The 4 nuts aren't enough.

 All I can say is 'horses' and 'water'....

If you don't have enough mechanical ability to remove a simple carburettor without having to ask how, then you certainly don't have the skills required to strip and rebuild it... May I suggest, without prejudice, that you take it to a shop...

I have it printed but not looked at it.
I am only asking because its a pain to have to take all the little parts out and end up getting messed up from not documenting whats it coming off.
Also if there was a way to take the bulk of it out then it would be better to work on a table and get to all the little parts slowly.
I can go to another forum if you wont give advise and are too proud of your abilities

Thanks Fun Times for that link.

Your original question was identifying the carburettor, which we gave you a copy of the manual, and the page on which that information was located. Some of us also gave our opinion on which carburettor it is. I don't see, short of travelling to your house and doing it for you, how we could have helped you any more than that. The next part of this thread was about removing the carb from the manifold (not block). I have given my honest and unbiased opinion that the skills required to strip and rebuild the carb are far more than those required to remove the fuel line, throttle linkages and any other items holding the carb to the engine. It has NOTHING to do with being too proud, it's just a realistic view of the situation.

I am more than willing to provide my knowledge here for free, but we need you to do the work at your end too... When we ask you to read the book, rather than just telling you what we think the carb might be, we are also enacting an old adage. Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day; teach him to fish, you feed him for the rest of his life.

If you no longer want my help, just say so....

Have the carb in front of you complete BEFORE you take it apart!

I once had to rebuild a carb. for my 1980 Mercruiser 470, and it was a 2 barrel Rochester.

The carb. kit used was for a 1967 Chevy 307 engine.

Re: identify my carb for rebuild

What were your "carb problems"???
It could be just that horribly dirty spark arrester choking the engine of air ;)
Good luck with your rebuild! :)

And we have already identified it as NOT being a Rochester....

Re: identify my carb for rebuild

i cleaned up the arrester...that pic was taken mid winter 2yrs ago so all that is just fogging oil ...
problem i was having is choke would remain open when its cold....say i take it to the lake and it won't start until i manuall close the butterfly.
also i am running alittle rich, i have some gas at odd times going into that clearish tube .. dont know the name but its for when it overflows gas.
sometimes i get bogging down and it would not start until i go and partially close the butterfly
either way time for a rebuild or at the least clean it all up because i have used it for 3 season and dont know how long the previous owner used it after he rebuilt it..i think about time plus i am selling the boat this season as i have a seadoo so i want it to operate properly.
i just got a a price for the mercarb rebuilt kit at around $97 and can get it by Jan10th...
is that price good and its from a merc dealer around town so not far to go pick it up

Re: identify my carb for rebuild

Neither one of your problems calls for rebuilding the carb. The choke is either out of adjustment or the coil is broken. Fuel in that clear line means your fuel pump has failed.
