Hello to all, I have an older Sea King 5 hp motor I would like to restore for my wife's family. It belonged to their Grandfather in northern Michigan. I have not found a serial or model number to identify it. I have (hopefully) attached a picture of the motor. Could someone tell what I have or where to find the model number? So far the only parts I have removed are the spark plug covers.
Gratefully yours, Steve

Welcome to iboats. :)

Picture posting click.

Down on the bottom left of your other post you'll see "Interact". Click the down arrow and choose Edit Post. Then you can blank out the content and put Delete in the title line. Let's stay on this thread.

Model and serial numbers are typically somewhere on the clamp assembly that hangs the outboard on the boat. It should have two or three letters and several numbers in the model number. Chances are it was made by Gale or Clinton, but there were other manufacturers of 5s as well. The Clinton would have a finned air-cooled powerhead.

Willy's right...there should be a plate on the transom clamp with model/serial numbers on it. If it's a Gale (generic E-rude), the numbers will look like this XXGG XXXXX. For example, 15GG 9014A would be a 1951 (reverse 1st 2 numbers) Gale (GG) and then the model number. Most 1950-51 and later Gales have a round knob on the end of the throttle advance lever, earlier ones have a finger-sized grip on the end of the advance lever. Gale was the generic mfg. division and made sea kings, sabers, sea bee and other badged motors until it was shut down in the 60's.
