So who can be the first to ID this drive? When you do, I'll post pictures of the rest of the boat.

Re: Identify this Drive

Its a project that I have somehow gotten drawn into. Its the drive to a hydrafoil boat. The elderly man use to design hydrafoils for the Navy years ago and has been building this boat for 40 years. That's an old MC A1 drive from the early 60's. No oil passage between the upper and lower so that is how he is getting away with the spacer in the middle. The engine is an aluminum V8 out of a early 60 Olds Starfire and is jackshafted back to the drive. The boat is wood and he built it from the keel up.

Its the drive to a hydrafoil boat.

Well, that explains the really long section between the upper and lower.

I also noticed the model is RC. Did it work on the foils? If I was able to build a model that nice, I sure wouldn't stick it in the water.

Re: Identify this Drive

It was a working model. The gentleman is 91 years old and my son and I are going to see if we can get it in the water for him in the next few months. He designed the Pegasus class ship for the navy. He has pictures of a Pegasus out running a LCAC here in the gulf.

Looks like it should be a tender to the Feadship yacht used in the James Bond movie with Sean Connery.

Re: Identify this Drive

UPDATE: As the story goes, I couldn't figure out how the antique reverse lock worked and neither could a older Mercruiser mechanic here locally. He gave me some song and dance but I could tell he was full of BS. So I did some southern engineering and modified the linkage and actually got it to lock down in reverse and release in forward. Sometimes I amaze myself. But during the surgery on the boat, we noticed that the owner had failed to block off the hole where the exhaust Y would bolt up. He was using through hull exhaust. I pulled the drive off last month and looked straight into the boat. So a plate was cut and bolted in place to block off what would have been a major water leak. Schooled the owner on the reason for the shift interupt switch and why it should be connected. So we left late yesterday evening with the intructions to get up a list of what he wanted us to do the next time we come over. Maybe with a bit of luck we can have this thing in the water for him by spring.

What kind of HP is that eng putting out. The most merc put on those 1ABC ez shift models was 165. ABC refer to horse power and gear ratio, ie a 120 b 140 c 160. it is way cool good luck.

Re: Identify this Drive

That is my concern also. But they did have a few 283 engines back then. Best I can figure is the engine will be putting out power somewhere in the 150 range. Normally the uppers had the ratio stamped on the side under the decal but this one doesn't.
