I purchased a project off Craigslist. The boat is a 1985 Nordic with a 260 HP, 350 sbc engine. The outdrive is missing the cover that goes on the rear of the housing. The only numbers I can find is a metal tag attached to the top of the upper housing. It reads, PZNO29001276B? Can the outdrive be identified from this tag? Thanks in advance for your expertise....-Rich

That is the correct tag , it should be a 290 .

A lot of drives will fit.
275/280 or 290
That year they mass produced a cheaper version(275) and thousands and thousands were used.
Is there a hydraulic system for trim/ tilt?
Pic of the PDS (primary drive shaft) end will also help.
Pictures of the stern and motor will help.

Yes it does have hydraulic tilt & trim. The only id on the engine is the decals on the valve covers, "Volvo Penta 260A". The boat came with a cracked block. I have a new 5.7L vortec ready to drop in the engine compartment. I want to go through the out drive before the new motor goes in. So if the out drive is a 290, this gives me a starting point to start buying seals, bearings & gaskets.....Thanks....-Rich

Give the serial number to whoever you buy the parts from.

I attached a decent Volvo Drive ID Chart and Volvo Engine listing. I think I got them from Don ... Sniff, sniff :(

That new Vortec might have problems with bolting up??
Seems they changed a few things over the years.
Start with the bellhousing and see if it will fit then the other stuff, like pumps and steering.
Good luck.

Look around as you might find a new older style some place.
Worked on a boat and it had 327's The owner wanted stock.
My boss got a pair at a local Chevy dealer.
That was in 1988 327's hadn't been made for quite a while.Look around.

I checked the Vortec for fitment. The bellhousing & exhaust manifolds are the same. I did have to switch the flywheel to a smaller 153 tooth for a one piece rear main seal. These came in 1990's Cameros & Corvettes. Due to the vortec's timing cover, and different intake bolt pattern, I have to re engineer the power steering pump & alternator brackets . Slowly the motor is coming together. Time to move on to the outdrive....-Rich

Since you have Hyd.tilt.
You'll need a 290 made close to the year of the boat.85.
The outdrive itself is basically the same as a 280 but the equipment to make it work with the hyd.tilt is different.
Oh yea, Volvo only wants 12,000 for a new drive.
I'm sure there is something cheaper out there.
Google: Marine salvage or any combo of the same.

Maybe I should clarify about my out drive. I don't want to replace mine, but go through it to assure it is in dependable condition to handle the added power from the new vortec. I don't have any history on the boat other than it sat in the Arizona desert for the past 2 years, and the hour meter is showing 198 hours. Next week the upper trans housing comes out so I can remove the bell housing to remove the Y exhaust pipe. The plan is to go with thru tramsom exhaust. Also going to inspect the PDS bearing, seals & universal joint....Thanks....-Rich
