Hello,

I'm about to buy a Sea Ray 230 OB with a Mercruiser 7.4 MPI. The engine has serial number 0L324988.

Is there a way to identify the precise model and year it's build?

Same for the Bravo I with serial 0L158871
Transom serial 0L519880

Thanks for reading.

Martin

Re: Identifying engine

Actually, your serial numbers are in the range of the 99 models. The parts information will call it 98, but that is only because it still uses the 98 parts catalog.

99 model year.jpg

The 2000 model year started at SN 0L605000 for the 7.4 MPI

Re: Identifying engine

Year of the boat has nothing to do with the year of the engine... Just have a look at the boat in my signature...

Still means nothing... My boat is just an example of a re-power..

A few years back, when Merc were finishing with the Renault engines (that gives you an idea of just how far back!), a local boat builder bought all the remaining engines Merc Australia had, at a GREATLY reduced price. That builder continued to fit those 'new' engines to boats for about 15 years.... So it was feasible to have a (for example) 1984 boat with a 1972 engine, and it was the 'original'....

Even in our boat shop we received engines long before we fitted them to a boat...

Back to my statement. Year of engine has absolutely nothing to do with year of boat. That's why the need for the engine serial number. That is the only way to look up the correct parts reference and service literature...

Re: Identifying engine

It's common for boats to have an engine package a year older than the boat. Boat builders order a large number of engine and drive packages they expect to use in that year. If they have some left over that they didn't use, they put them in next years model. If they run out, they may have to install next years model engines.
That is why I always ask for serial number, not year.

Re: Identifying engine

I *think* that my boat is an example where manufacturer ran out of engines, as my boat is a 1996 and has (supposedly) a 1997 version of the engine (0F8020036 & 39) They are very early on in the serial number sequence, which started at 0F802000 . . .
