I bought a boat several years ago. The motor is I am guessing is a 78. I was told to get the #s off the welch pin. I did, but it does not follow the logic I have seen to identify the motor. The #s are 6R78B J4914924. Somebody stole the hood cowl and I am trying to replace it. If you know the what the motor is (hp & Yr), do you also know what hood cowls will fit it? I still take my kiddo fishing, but it is louder than heck. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Re: Identifying Johnson Motor

by inputting the numbers you gave (6r78b)brp site comes up with the following ,1978 6 hp. johnson. you should be able to find a cowl at a salvage yard or maybe at a marie dealer or even ebay.

Re: Identifying Johnson Motor

I recently boat a small boat with a Johnson 18hp sea horse on it. I would like some help determining the age of this motor. The model #FD-15F, THE SERIAL #2215495

Re: Identifying Johnson Motor

Model V4512S is not a OMC model number. However, model number V4S-12S is a 1960 75hp Johnson. You're mistaking the first "S" for a "5".

FD-15 is a 1961 18hp Johnson

Re: Identifying Johnson Motor

Model numbers are sometimes found on the serial number plate on the engine block. It will be a nickel-sized convex aluminum plate a/k/a welch plug.
