Hi
I am hoping someone can help me. I have just purchased a 1972 Mercury 9.8 short shaft manual start outboard. The model number is illegible. The serial number is 3264425 I'm trying to find out what the model number is so I can find parts for it. Can someone provide info on how I can go about finding model number information?

Thanks for your assistance in advance

I guess we can say welcome aboard - Finally. LOL

The serial number is all you need to find parts for Mercury outboards. Other motors use models numbers, but not Merc.

What parts do you need?

if you need a water pump, there are two shaft diameters (0.437 and 0.456), you must measure your shaft prior to ordering parts

Is the website you're looking for requiring a model number to look up parts? Typically the engine serial number will get you the parts you need but I see in your case (though there) the serial number doesn't seem to go low enough to fit your 3264425 number that is easy to find anyways.

So with that the model number should help you out better.... In knowing your engine is an 1972 9.8 HP, looking up the engine model numbers made in 1972 there is only one number that pops up and that is model number 1110102.

Either search online MERC 110 PARTS LIST Part number 62430 for a few sites that offer parts or the model number 1110102 will get you roughly two parts sites as well.
