Identifying sterndrive model and serial number

I have a 1983 Mercruiser 305/5L MCM228 engine with serial # 6285627. The plastic sterdrive serial# on top of the bell housing is broken off. There appeared to be a label on the port side of the bell housing lower down, but this is also beyond reading. I read somewhere the serial number was stamped underneath this label, but I don't see that either. What is the best way to identify this sterndrive for parts ordering? I think the sterndrive is pre-ALPHA vintage and possibly something they called Type I

Re: Identifying sterndrive model and serial number

Thanks for all the info. I contacted Wellcraft with the hull#, engine serial# and date of mfg and the reply was they didn't keep records that far back. Very unhelpful. Can I assume Alpha One sterndrive parts are compatible with what I have?

If I were to replace the whole upper drive of the sterndrive could I use an Alpha One?
