idle and timming

1990 260hp 5.7 mercruiser.<br />having trouble with idle and timming engine idleing around 1000 rpm cant get below 950 or so. also cant get timming at 8 degrees its at about 14 advanced right now what am i doing wrong and what should i be looking for.<br />thanks

Disconnect the throttle cable from the carb and see if it will idle down. It may just be the cable itself needs adjusted.<br /><br /><br />

Did you loosen the distributor hold down bolt so you can turn the distributor?<br />You also have to get the idle down, that will probably bring the advance down when you get the idle down to 700 rpm.
