1975 115 johnson crossflow. I am trying to get it to idle down lower but in doing so I lose my wot. Ihave moved the idle screw stop and also the control cable plastic nut. there seems to be some slop in the control box and when the throttle is put to idle it doesn't go all the way without me moving the spark advance linkage by hand. there is no binding inthe movement at all. just slop. would it be possible to put a spring on the linkage to assist in returning to idle? Maybe on the advance linkage to the block somehow?

Set the idle with the control cables disconnected.<br />Then set the control cables to the linkage. Are you losing WOT because the timer base is not advancing? On my 73 I had to replace the vinyl jacket encasing the timerbase conductors as it was too stiff from age.

No I am losing wot because I am adjusting the control cable plastic nut to try to get it to idle down. everything is free and moves fine. I am just wondering if the throttle return spring or something may be broke or wore out.

Even with the cable removed, the spark advance won't return to the stop screw. That is why I am wondering about a return spring.

Take the linkage apart and see what you have.
