I took my 73 50hp evinrude out the other day. I noticed that it was running great but the only way that it will idle is if I push the chock in about quater of the way in. Is it just out of adjustment or could it be inside the carb.

Re: Idle Problem

Could be in the carb Rob, especially if its been sitting around awhile with fuel in it. Pull it off and clean it up. Not real difficult but I'd get a shop manual first. That'll also help you adjust it if that's what the problum is.

c/6

Hooty

Re: Idle Problem

Could I put some carb cleaner in a tank of gas and run it. Do you think that would clean it out. The boat sat durning the winter and it did have gas in it.

Re: Idle Problem

If it is "running great" except for the idle you might get away with just using the idle mixture screw to enrich the idle mixture (which is what you are temporarily doing with the carburetor choke). If that doesn't work then the carburetor probably needs to be thoroughly taken apart and cleaned. Good luck.
