idle problems

I have a 1984 evinrude 90hp. When I run the boat on muffs it runs fine, but at the lake today when I try to start it on the water it is very hard to get to idle. For some reason the controls I have are not equipped with a warm-up lever. I think it is idling to low. When I get it going on the lake it runs great. I just get it started real quick and throw it into gear and give it a bit of gas. how can i make it idle faster? The compression was good on it last time I checked it. It sat for about 6 months without being run. I ran sea-foam through the first tank. Could something on the carbs be messed up? I love the boat and motor, but need to fix this.

Re: idle problems

could be carbs ... maybe they are no longer synched... maybe they got dirty during 6 mo wait.
could also be compression issue, or timing. you should have a throttle ajust screw on your linkage under the motor cover.... this will allow you to set low speed idle limit for carb/timing (1st portion of throttle adv is all timing)
can you tell us what rpm it is idling at now? so we have a better idea of what is going on

Re: idle problems

An idle that is too low is a pain. Your engine should idle between 650 and 750 rpm- set when the boat is floating normally in the water, and the engine is in forward gear. Anything lower than that and you can have stalling issues. The idle screw is located on the spark advance lever. It does not adjust the carb. On that engine the ignition timing sets the idle.
