idle speed adjustment

I have a 5.7L alpha 1. It diesels sometimes, and according to the boats tach the idle speed is too high(1000rpm). Is the boats tach accurate enough to use to adjust the idle?

I've found that most boat tachs are always off some. Best thing to do is get a known good shop tach to check yours with and adjust your boat tach to.
