Idle speed causing problems?

I've been having some problems getting my motor to go into gear. I have replaced the control cables and adjusted them. The motor will now go into gear on the muffs in the driveway. The problem is when I put the motor in the water it will not go into reverse? I am thinking that the motor is idling too fast and that the extra drag from the water is keeping it from going into gear? On the muffs it is idling at 1500-1600 rpms.

Also there is a lot of play in the throttle linkage, is this normal?

Dont know if its the shifting problem but yur idle is about 4-500 rpms to high on muffs - Dont think there shud be any "slack" in the linkage:confused:
I'm still fine tuning my '87 70hsp :)

So I guess the next question is why do I have the slack and how do I get rid of it?

1st has the lower unit been off recently? if so the shift rod could be out of adjustment.

2nd, did you use the correct cables? 3 rd, it is a OEM control?

you disconnect cable at the motor, put motor and control, in neutral, and idle. now adjust the cable trunion nuts so the cables connect to the motor linkage, without moving motor linkage.

Ok I got the slack out of the linkage, now tryin to fix the idle speed. Now the motor won't start at all. It will crank but wont start. It was running and idling nice and smooth, just too fast. I havent messed with anything on the motor other than the shift linkage. I opened up the remote control and lubed up everything in there. Could I have messed up something in the remote?
